95 5SFE differential seal

1995 4 cyl - Replaced right side cv axle yesterday, had torn boot. Amazingly it popped right out of the bearing carrier with no problem at all. I was dreading the job as I had horrible experience with a 6 cyl cv axle stuck in the bearing carrier. Anyway....wanted to replace the differential seal as well while I had it out....the one Autozone shows turned out to be just a fraction smaller on the outside diameter....they didn't show any other seal that measured the right size. It is 2 1/8" outside diameter. Even the toyota dealership couldn't give me the right part without the full VIN number. I ended up putting a strip of duct tape around the outside of the seal and that made it a perfect fit but of course I'm concerned whether that will hold up over time and would rather put the correct seal in place. Anybody have a part number? It's an american made car...VIN starts with a 4.

Why don't you just give dealer the full VIN?

I did...yesterday. But he's gotta order it so I probably won't get it until tomorrow. Just trying to expedite things. He can't drive the car until I get the right seal. The tape didn't hold up at all....of course the tranny fluid ruined the tape...I should have known that. So now it's sitting until I can get the right seal...

Seals are such low cost items it usually doesn't pay to get other than dealer. If I remember watch the depth to which you install it, it makes a difference.

Well it's supposed to be in tomorrow. Hopefully it's the right size. I've got the axle back out and waiting. Piece of cake when they're not seized in the bearing carrier. Can someone verify...does the 4 cyl differential need to be filled separately from the regular tranny fill? Or is that on the 6 cylinder? Or both??

On the 1995 4 cyl'd - YES. You'll find the drain plug at the rear and a PITA to remove.
