98 Camry variable rpm

Yesterday, when i started the camry after 20 mins break, the car was showing variable rpm and was making noise like increase engine noise, decrease engine noise. there was slight vibration too.

the rpm was around 750-900 rpm and was continuously varying in that range.

what could it be?

one of the mechanics said, timing belt may need a change soon since its loose. could it be because of this? please advice

So its idle RPM is bouncing between 750 & 900 RPM?... surging up and down? No, that's not typically caused by a timing belt. Most of the time, it's because the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve needs to be cleaned.

Does it have a V6 or 4 cylinder engine? If it's the 4 cyl, here's one DIY thread showing how to remove/clean it. And here's another.

thanks for the info. it is a 4 cylinder. 2.2 LE.

I will see if i can DIY. Else will have to get it done outside.
