Strut/Coil replacement

Just had my tires rotated on Friday and the mechanic add "Recommend replacing struts" on my receipt. When I asked him about it, he simply said it was a 'preventative measure' due to the number of miles on the car. The car has ~230,000 miles with the original struts and coils. As far as I can tell there is no leakage from the struts and everything seems to be intact. I'm sure the struts are well worn, but I don't notice excessive bouncing when going through intersections or over railroad tracks. When I press down on the side fender the front struts only rebound the once (no bouncing) and the same is true for the rear struts when I press down on the trunk.

Obviously there is no 'recommended' replacement interval for struts, and I've seen that many of you have only replaced them because you're lowering from stock or had problems with them. Having said that, have any of you ever experience a catastrophic failure with a strut? In other words, is 'preventative maintenance' necessary for the struts, or should I only worry about replacing them when the start giving me trouble and SHOWING signs of wear? I'm perfectly happy with the ride that my struts provide right now, but if I'm in danger of having a strut completely fail on me then I'll be glad to replace them (once the weather warms up , of course). What do you guys think?

The original rear struts on my Camry failed badly suddenly at 210k miles. Fine one day, grossly bad the next. They were like those old Monroe commercials, where the back end would bounce freely up & down like a pogo stick. It was dangerous, but not like failed-brakes-dangerous.

The original front struts I replaced @ 305k miles. They weren't leaking oil or showing any obvious signs of being bad. But the handling was a bit "nervous" going over ripply pavement at freeway speeds. When I got them out, they were still holding their gas charge! After replacing them (with KYBs), I definitely could notice the improvement, but the old ones weren't even close to being what I'd call dangerous, like the rears were.
