installed engine and trans
Didnt remember aligning the torque convert, all my friends said that was my problem for no trans fluid pressure.
so today i unbolted the trans, took off the driver side axle, and backed the trans off supporting it with a jack about 3 inches, felt the converter click in once, spun it again, using my fingertips the whole time, all that i could fit in, it didnt click anymore, so i bolted it up.
upon startup my fluid level dropped 1/8" off it its 4 inches of fluid height(way over level since the TC refused to fill last time.
well, i let it idle for a few minutes
while it idled for the first 10 seconds it had the sound of a loose flywheel, kinda a rattley, hallow just, noise. it sounded like me the insides of the TC finally spinning and working to fill the case up.
i let it idle for 5 minutes untill the car reached operating temp, put it in drive, and nothing.
so i got frustrated and took the whole thing apart again, split the casing so far from the engine that i could fit my hand in, and spun it again and again an again, i cant get the damn thing to click again.
so question time
what was the weird plate rattle groan thing going on for the first bit.
how many clicks does it take it install the TC on these cars, ive heard 2 to 3 depending on the make of the car.
Why wont this stupid transmission fill up?
ive never smelt burning transmission, never had any pressure in the lines never heard the sound of a burning out gears.
ive never touched an auto before so i didnt even know a TC needed aligned in any way before install. but it does and now it needs my ignorance fixed.
also i used a hand pump and pulled about 1qt or more of fluid back out of the pan and forced it into the TC cooler line, level in the dipstick dropped an inch
Is this a new toque converter? did you fill it up? There's a small screw on it side that you can remove.
Did you install flex plate correctly? It can only go in one way and also make sure the washer is on outside of flex plate.

Old tC off of the old working trans that came with the car, shifted and worked fine before the pistons got all hydrolocky from oil. it was not filled up unless some remained from when i took it off the old transmission.
flex plate installed correctly and washer is the on the outside torqued to 65ftlbs
well, i reinstalled the trans today after making tripple sure the TC was lined up as i pushed the cases together, started it up, and immediately i got the sound of which i can only describe as flywheel chatter
like this guy just constant pangpangpangpangpangpang whirling noise
im thinking, judging from the web, that my TC might be reuined from either when my engine idled at 5k unaligned, because i say slight smoke come from between the bellhousing for a few seconds before i killed the engine. or when we pulled the trans off of the engine the TC fell about 5 feet onto my carpeted garage floor, long story for that one. but it hit the ground hard, i dont think that could have done anything to that solid steel TC but ive seen a crank twisted before so anything is possible really.
So, buying just a torque converter is actually impossible, nobody sells just a torque converter. but i do love when they ask if ive called toyota and i get to respond with, yeah, for 909$.
but ive found a more accurate noise, this is the exact same sound i get except all of the time.

I know all the manuals caution against dropping the TC. I've always careful and never move transmission unless I first remove TC. Here in CA you can get TC from junk yard for $20. I just bought both trans and tc for my MB for $100. That's about $3k for rebuild
DAYAM!!!... that engine moves WAAAAYYYY too much when it's put in gear. Your motor mounts are toast!!!
not my motor, my car does it all the time, just makes that noise as soon as i start it. i bought new mounts for her. when i put it in gear nothing happens, because for some reason the trans wont get fluid pressure. hence my problem.

yeah i dont know, i usually can find anything in a pull a part or junkyard, but everywhere i called said the trans had to be included. i just ended up buying a whole transmission for 200$ with 110k on it, pretty good deal IMO.
MB's are awesome, i keep looking for a kompressor on craigslist to hoon around in after my bmw got sold but no dice on a good price, there all hurrdurr 10k for a 90s komp. what model do you have?
