Reverse lights out (but "R" works)

I've got a 1993 Camry 4 cyl, auto, and both back up / reverse lights stopped working. I don't think anyone has posted my particular problem -- the "R" on the dashboard indicator works fine, it's only the bulbs that are out. I'm aware of the fix with the Park Neutral Position Switch (PNP switch) but since the "R" light is working I'm thinking I might be barking up the wrong tree.

Also, there is no dashboard light that indicates a burn-out bulb and the check engine light is not on. I have already tried the following:

- checked all fuses (in particular, the "gauge" fuse)
- checked the bulbs
- checked for a wiring short in the trunk
- adjusted the little screw in the shifter assembly as discussed at this thread: Reverse Light switch problem!

I don't have a meter so when I say I have checked the trunk for a wiring short, that means I wiggled the wires around and nothing changed.

I've never used the ECM but wondering if I should try to see if a code flashes...

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
ND

A couple of follow-ups...

First, I checked the ECM since first posting. The "O/D Off" light flashes continously. I think that means no problem according to my Haynes manual, but the check engine light is also flashing and I'm not sure if that is signaling "ok" or "not ok". Any thoughts?

Second, I have no experience with electrical meters. If I bought one, could I confirm whether the problem is caused by a short in the wire? I might buy one anyway to do a continuity test on the PNP Switch as outlined in the Haynes manual.

Thanks,
ND

When you say you checked for a wiring short in the trunk, did you actually open up that loom of wires and carefullly inspect the wires inside there for freying and breaking? That's always my first thought when anyone has a problem with any of the rear lights.

3rd Generation

Good call Mike G. The wire was broken coming into the trunk area, just after a "Y" split where the bundle of wires was grouped with a larger bundle. Unfortunately, I removed and cleaned the PNP Switch before finding the break.

Well, at least it only cost you some time and effort, and not $ before you found the proper fix. Glad I could help.
