95 1MZ Water Pump - help!

95 Camry wagon, 195K, bought with 67K, water pump went out.

After lots of reading in these forums, decided to tackle the job myself. Bought the Aisin kit with pump, idler wheels, oil seals and belts ($209 on EBay), but have run into two roadblocks:

a) engine mounting bracket on top of water pump has studs with the E-8 Torx heads, both of which stripped. Options now include using visegrips to remove studs (could the studs snap?) and then replace them. Or possibly raise the engine to allow removing the bracket and more easily extracting the studs?
shows the technique on a 00 Lexus 3.0 - has anyone done this? Is it an option for an older Camry?

b) tried using the bump start method of removing the crankshaft pulley bolt, but it's on so tight that it didn't work (removed EFI fuses, and braced my 24" breaker bar driveway - then tried bracing against the lower control arm). Maybe I'll try charging up the battery to full charge and try again. That failing, the local rental place has 1" drive impact wrenches available.

Cranshaft pulley bolt is out. Rented a 3/4" impact wrench, and even with that it took several minutes - including a switch to clockwise rotation to try to break loose the corrosion - to get out the bolt.

onwards......
(and am starting to wonder whether the timing belt was ever changed on this car.....)

Have fun torqueing that sucker to 160 ft-lbs when you reinstall the balancer. Maybe just keep the impact until you get to that point.

Having just done the timing belt, with the engine out of the car, it was still not fun. Couldn't get the cam sprockets off, and could only get 1 of the 2 studs out of the water pump area. I was able to loosen the metal back plate behind the cam sprockets, and then pry the metal up around the water pump, so that I could slide the pump out along that stud. After I installed it, I just banged the back plate back into position.

Now that you've had a closer look in there...
Did you find the factory timing belt (195k) intact (it's a 16 year old)
or damaged when water pump quit ?
Pump bearing failure ?

TIA
