Most likely the ignition switch is going/gone bad. Having it 'stay on' is one mode of failure - failing to come on is another. Another possibility is relay(s) sticking on - but several would need to do this at the same time - this is much less likely.
Unless the starter motor was running all the time, the starter relay is the least likely suspect.
