3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Car wouldn't turn off / brake light on / engine ticking
I have owned my 1996 Toyota Camry, automatic transmission, ~147,000 miles, for five years now and until today I've never had to deal with any strange problems (my previous car was a volvo, which delighted me with all sorts of random issues).
Last night I started the car, disengaged my e-brake, and the brake light stayed on. Rengaged/disengaged, tried to see if anything was stuck, nothing. I didn't have far to go, so I started driving. No noticeable issue accelerating.
Stopped to get gas about 5 blocks away. Put the car in Park, turned off the ignition. The car turned off but the engine made turning noises, like the sound of an engine turning that can't start. I turned the car back on. Shut off, same issue. Did this a few times and eventually it completely shut off. Additionally, the engine this whole time while "on" made an unusual ticking noise.
I called my bro-in-law who suggested tapping the fuses in the relay/fuse boxes by the battery. I did that, started the car, and it's back to normal. No brake light on, no engine ticking noise. Normal start/off.
Any ideas? I'm about to drive 12 hours tomorrow (all highway) and don't know how concerned I should be.

I dont know the Camrys that well but I agree with the BIL about checking the relays.......the other thing that it might be as a generic automotive suggestion is the ignition switch......

Two possibilities. If it has a foot brake, sometimes the pedal doesn't come back up all the way when released. Try pulling the release handle, and lift the pedal with your toe. Mine does this often. The other possiblity is that it's low on brake fluid. Check the reservoir and verify the level is above the "MIN" line.

if tapping on relays makes it good then one of relays tends to get stuck (and knocking on it makes it unstuck). check all relays and try narrowing it down, replace the faulty one.
for brake light staying on, as above, check the brake fluid level, if it's low then the light will tend to stay on at all times.
