1998 Camry 2.2L Always Stalls

Hello everyone,

I've searched these forums quite a few times and found a few answers - and implemented all the solutions. However, my 1998 2.2L Camry still continuously stalls when warm.

Basically, the car will start just fine (assuming it didnt stall previously - if it did it has to sit for about 2-3 hours prior to being able to start again). It will idle well for about 10-15 minutes, and then simply shut off. Likewise, if you start driving when the car is cold, it will drive well for about 10-15 minutes and then shut off. As I mentioned above, the car will not restart unless I let it sit for at least 2-3 hours.

I've read the forums enough to find a few good solutions. So far I've replaced:

1. EGR valve and all associated tubing
2. Coolant temperature sensor
3. ECU
4. Spark plugs
5. Spark plug wires
6. Ignition coils

I'm really lost as to what else it could be. I've replaced pretty much most of the ignition system (including checking to make sure that any of the ignition harnesses/wires werent damaged). The only two things that I could think of next would be:

1. Clearning the throttle body/intake manifold with carb cleaner
2. Something is wrong with the fuel system.

The problem seems like its electrical (since the car runs fine for a while)... Anyone have any ideas as to what else to check/change? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Clean the throttle body and the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) located right underneath the throttle. You should be able to spray into it from the throttle itself. I had the same problem where it would not turn over and when I did this, she worked fine.

EDIT: This would do it for me at cold start and after driving it for a while........

Only shuts off when on idle or also when throttle depressed?

Sorry for the long response delay.

I tried cleaning the throttle body - nothing seems to have changed.

And the car will stall both at idle and with the throttle depressed.

First things first... When it won't start, check to see if it's got spark. Pull a plug wire, insert a plug, and lay the plug against a good ground. Crank the engine and see if there's spark in the plug's gap.

am i correct in assuming the car will stay running when warm as long as its driving and not idling? my money is on a clogged/malfunctioning AIC valve.

(assuming i am correct in my car knowledge, which isnt always spot on) when the engine is at idle and cold, air is pulled though the EGR valve. when warm, that shuts and strictly pulls air from the IAC at idle. this certainly can be the culprit.

sounds like you can turn a wrench, try taking off the IAC and checking it out.
