3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey all, I've got a 96 Camry LE with the 5SFE engine, and I always have had annoying vibrations while in drive but stopped, like when waiting for a light.
I had a weird shifting feeling I could feel through the gas pedal when I'd accelerate from a stop, and realized my lower front engine mount was shot, and the engine was torquing back. I replaced it, and my idle vibrations actually got worse, but the shifting feeling was fixed. It was almost as if the engine was now hooked to the car better and transferred more of the vibrations to the steering wheel and frame.
I then replaced the top dogbone engine mount because it was deteriorating, and this helped a little but not much. The main thing annoying me was how the vibrations would cause squeaks and rattling I could hear that drove me crazy.
A couple days ago I wanted to clean out my fuel system and had heard good things about this stuff called BG44K. The only place around here that carries it is NAPA. You have to ask for it as they keep it behind the counter, and it cost almost $25. It comes in a can and I added it to my gas tank with a funnel.
After a couple days of driving probably 95% of the vibrations are gone! My engine didn't feel like it was running roughly at all before, but now it is so much smoother. I can feel almost no vibrations through the steering wheel anymore.
Just wanted to let you guys know in case any of you may be having the same problem. I didn't expect it to have such a good effect on reducing the vibrations at all. Hope this helps some of you out, the $25 is well worth it!

may give it a shot on both toyotas. have never tried BG44K and so far read only good opinions about it
thanks for a review.
My wife's 4 cyl '00 has still some very slight idle vibrations in driving gears at full stop despite the fact that it now has a new IAC valve and all engine mounts replaced.
before I start tearing apart the cylinder head on this car I will surely try BG44K.
other opinions on BG44K I find, pretty impressive. seems that BG44k is like 3x more concentrated dose of Techron and much better than sea foam (in gas tank that is), interesting.

Nice review...my Camry shakes so bad in D at stops, I shift to N almost every time...
I want to try this stuff but I just changed my oil 5 days ago....I may wait a bit.

Ya, it was weird because I wasn't really expecting it to fix the vibrations. I've read on here many times that people have this issue though so maybe it will work for some of you.
I drove all day today on it and noticed a gain in power as well. Kind of interesting. I'm only through about a third of the treated tank, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.
My brand new Michelin Primacys are doing awesome as well. So much quieter than the Bridgestones before them. Definitely improved handling quite a bit as well.
according to the chart on wikipedia site, the Euro95 (95 RON octane) is closest to our American premium 91 (AKI) octane. so unless your local station's premium is 93, go with premium 91 to see similar difference.
premium 93 (AKI) would correspond closely to Euro98 (98 RON octane) fuels.

I've tried running 84 and 91, and they both feel the same and get the same gas mileage for me. Interesting he would have such different results in a similar car.
well, first of all a properly maintained 5s-fe engine which is "in tune", is optimized to run best with regular 87 (AKI) octane featuring 9.5:1 compression ratio.
generally, this engine should run same good on 87 or 91 fuel. if it runs significantly better on premium fuel, this could be an indication of engine being out of tune (calling for higher octane rating trying to compensate).
I wouldn't worry about it much.
