93 exhaust question? help!

My muffler rusted off the exhaust pipe and now I'm in desperate need of a new/used one. On my local craigslist, there's a guy that has a 97 exhaust forsale for 50 bucks in fairly good condition and while i did some research, i read that the hangers are different but which ones? I'm hoping its the muffler piece. Both camry's are 4 cylinder btw.

If anyone could help me that'll be great! thank you!

I don't think that the 4th gen will fit the 3rd gen layout but think of it this way it gives you an excuse to upgrade the exhaust system

Upgrade to what, and why? You won't gain any MPG or performance. The only thing you will gain is more noise. And if the muffler rusted off hes' already gained that.

That isn't really true.

A great example is the 2002 Solara muffler. It has a solenoid in it to change the output of the muffler depending on driving condition. It also resulted in a horsepower increase.

A high quality muffler that is designed better internally can give small gains in power, look better, and still be relatively quiet. Having no muffler is bad for the engine as it loses too much back pressure, is WAY too loud and can cause a burned valve.

Not really a fair comparison. 9 years newer, completely different engine than a 2.2 with unknown thousands of miles on it. And at best what would you get a 5% power increase (probably less) you wouldn't even notice that 6 extra HP on a 3000 lb car.

Not true again. The engine in question was also a 5SFE (maybe it was 2001) with the only difference being the ignition setup and balance shafts.

Also the power increase isn't the only reason you upgrade the exhaust. Looks are a major reason. Plus his exhaust is rusted off. He has to do something with it anyway. Why not do something worth it. Also a 5% increase probably would be felt especially when trying to keep up with faster and faster cars at the lights. 132HP is always better than 130HP no matter how you spin it.

I am not saying he should go ahead and put high compression pistons, a full length cold air intake, cams, a megasquirt ECU, and a full exhaust system. I am saying that if your exhaust rusted off there is no reason to not upgrade the exhaust while you are repairing it already. You generalized that all mufflers are loud. That is most certainly not true. Even a new 2GRFE with mufflers deleted is still manageable in its sound.

i found my local pull-it-yourself parts yard had a number of gen 3/3.5 exhausts still on the cars. i bought a used one since mine rusted through at the inlet to the muffler. i think it was about $40, then bought 2 clamps and an adapter (to connect 2 sections of pipe tigether) and bolted it all together.
