96 Camry 5SFE Engine Races When Hot, Stalls

I've tried several searches, but can't find anything similar to my problem.

Recently, when the engine gets warm, the engine feels like it's "pulling" when I stop at a light and shows about 1000 rpms on the tach. If I shift to N, the engine races to 2000 rpm, then dies when I shift back into D. Restarting is very hard. I couldn't get it restarted one day last week, had it towed to a shop, and had the fuel pump & filter replaced. All seemed fine until yesterday when I exited the freeway, stopped at the end of the off-ramp, and had the same problem. I managed to get it restarted and drive the 1.5 miles home, but the engine was running fast the whole way. This morning, it started normally and is at a normal 1100 rpm fast idle when cold. I haven't driven it until warm yet.

It seems like it could be a sensor, but I'm not knowledgable enough to know. The only indication before I started having the problem was an almost imperceptible "bump" or "pop" when I shifted from D to R in order to back into my driveway with the engine warm about a week ago. I'm not sure if I actually felt or just heard it, but the engine speed was high when I parked it and wouldn't kick down when I tapped the accelerator, or when I shut off and restarted the engine.

Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas? I don't want to spend a fortune having a mechanic try to diagnose the problem, and I'm really hoping it's something simple I can do myself. Help, please!

Thanks,
Gregg

Could be a sticking throttle body, sticking IAC valve, and/or a bad ECT sensor.

IAC=idle air control
ECT=engine coolant temperature
