3rd Generation To flex or not to flex

Now I know its a flex pipe on the v6, but I am getting ready to have to replace it again. I have read that the flex is there for functionality with the motor moving around, but would it be absolutely crazy to have a front pipe made out of just solid pipe? Does anyone have experience with this?

No experience with doing that, but it seems like a bad idea to me. The engine is mounted on rubber mounts to isolate the engine vibrations from being transmitted to the car body. Because of that, it moves a bit when it's generating acceleration/deceleration torque. The flex pipe is in there to allow that to happen. Replacing it with a rigid pipe would likely not last long; the stress generated when the engine tries to move repeatedly would likely crack it quickly.

If the flex pipe is breaking again after a short time, inspect the motor mounts. If they're broken, they can allow the engine to move too much, and break the flex pipe.

Any solid pipe will just crack and soon. If it's too solid, it can actually crack the exhaust manifold.

Not good.

Do you really think that Toyota engineers went for the more expensive approach for no good reason?
