Australia 2000 camry error codes

Hi everyone,
I know this is a rather long winded question for a newbie but i really need some advice

Recently I have decided to finally do something about my ABS light that has been constantly on for nearly 6 months haha.
The first thing I did was check and clean the ABS sensors a few weeks ago when I rotated my tyres, the rears were a little dirty but nothing extreme and also no corrosion could be seen. Light still on.

Today I jumped the Tc and E1 terminals on the diagnostic plug to see if it would give me a fault code.
The code I got was:

Abs code -*24

And from a quick google search I found that it might be this:
open or shirt circuit in 3-position solenoid circuit in left rear wheel.

If someone has any idea as to whether or not this is accurate it would be much appreciated.

On a side not I also noticed that the Check Engine and O/D lights were flashing codes aswell so I took them down and tried to find what they were.

Check Engine code - 21:
O2 emissions or heat sensor

O/D code - 63:
severed NO.2 solenoid or short circuit - severed wire harness or short circuit.

Now what I get from those is that they are pretty serious codes to have.
But what confuses me is that the Check Engine light doesn't stay on when I start the engine nor does the O/D light. So why would I get those codes if the computer doesn't think they're important enough to light up the Warning lights during normal driving.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

ABS code 24 = Left rear solenoid valves faulty

trouble area assigned to it is: ABS actuator (left rear inlet or outlet solenoid valve).

If this is about Bosch design with ECU attached on side of actuator then I'd start looking for a replacement ABS module. tested working junk yard pulls are around $120 on US ebay including domestic free shipping sometimes.

you should use obd2 scanner to get codes from ECU and transmission for the engine/powertrain on any modern car. I know nothing about engine code 21 nor o/d code 63 on a obd2 car.

did you mean P0121? That would Throttle Position Sensor.

cool so i was on the right track for the ABS system. thanks for the tip.

as for the other two:

It could be p0121, the flash sequence i got from the check engine light was - 2 flashes - pause - 1 flash - long pause - repeat, so as i am unsure of how to read this it could be as you say but if you google engine flash code 21 most results will have something to do with o2 sensors.

Is there a site that one could go to that has a listing for obd2 codes?
also how do you decipher the codes - did i read the flash sequence correctly?

cheers

I think you are reading the sequence correctly, but that is how it was done on OBD1 cars (pre-'96), so I don't know to which code table you should refer with that to, OBD1 (there is something like that) or OBD2 (nothing like it).

check this out, most of it is correct:
http://www.troublecodes.net/Toyota/

also if you have a smartphone with android you can get a free app Torque for reading codes and some live monitoring (limited in free version). Torque Pro (full version) is just $5 anyways

a nice bluetooth OBD2 interface (for smartphone or BT capable laptops) are sold on Hong Kong ebay (or even on american amazon nowadays) at no more than $25 shipped worldwide, e.g.:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/?_nkw=blueto...d=308798513773

your 2000 camry should be OBD2 compatible. Toyota was very strict about their cars meeting OBD2 standards past 1996 ... at least in USA and Japan, not sure about Australian market.

I was also under the impression that post 96 Yotas were dominantly OBD2 so i was a little confused when the P0 code tables i saw didn't match up with the code i had, but as i continue on with my research i am beginning to think that even though my 2000 Camry is OBD2 compliant it also has the option of pumping out OBD1 codes on the off chance a mechanic or (more commonly) a DIY'er doesn't have access to a code reader.

I found a website that has code tables and instructions on finding and deciphering OBD1 codes for pre 94 Lexus' and what they have on there is exactly what i did and they also have matching light sequences for the codes i have.

http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/intro/codereading.html

It's similar to the site you provided me but with a more comprehensive explanation on how to retrieve codes, for example:
"For engine and transmission codes you place the jumper wire in Te1 and E1. For air bag codes, ABS and TRAC codes, you place the jumper wire in Tc and E1."

Now i just have to figure out why i am getting OBD1 engine and transmission codes when i connected Tc and E1 terminals when apparently its supposed to be Te1 and E1.

Thanks for your guidence Fenixus,
hopefully the repairs will be easier than the diagnostics =P

Cheers

in USA (except for California), most auto parts store chains like Autozone and Advance Auto will scan obd2 codes for free if you drive up to them.

i'd suggest using obd2 scanner instead of flashing method. I have those Te1, Tc, E1 pins too, but this is not the way to go on the obd2 compliant car.

why overcomplicate something that is actually very easy? I scan my cars ECUs for all kinds of codes (both stored and also pending - unconfirmed yet) with a press of 2 buttons on my smartphone ...

obd2 also gives you ability to monitor engine sensors LIVE while car is running. awesome stuff if you know how to make use of it.

i live in aus so i don't know of anywhere that would do free obd2 scans but i can definately say you have convinced me to buy a scanner. If i keep my wagon as long as i plan to it would be a very good investment i believe.

cheers

OBD2 scanners are a generic tool, like ratchet wrenches. As long a you're driving cars, not just that specific vehicle, it will be useful.
