Have to replace timing belt gaskets after 30k miles!

So i noticed an oil leak coming from the passenger side. After closer inspection, I noticed the lower timing belt gasket was wet with oil. Seems the front cover is leaking oil. I just replaced my timing belt, water pump 2 years / 30,000 miles ago.

Bummer.

Unsure if I will change out the water pump this go around.

Besides the belt and the water pump you should also change out all the oil seals and the oil pump o-ring (part of the $5.10 Fel-Pro crank seal set).

As far as the water pump goes, if you're going back in again I'd spend the extra $30 or so on the pump. If you can do your own work and don't mind going back in if it doesn't last another 5-years/60K miles, then no problem in leaving it this time. Many pumps last a lot longer than 5yr/60K, but I just change them (along with oil seals and pulleys) while in there, it's the time saved, as you have found out.

The pump shaft seal or the o-ring are know to leak. If the pump shaft has a groove worn into it that's another $30 or so. See the pump o-ring picture:

Since a local shop performed the previous install, I'm having angst at paying once again since the intervals are typically longer.

Except if the shop only changed out the timing belt and water pump, and if nothing was leaking at the time then it may be hard to get them to fix it free.

Even at the dealer they do not change out the seals unless they're leaking or if you force them. (Some still don't even if you paid them ). Many don't even routinely change out the water pump. Why? First of all customers may think they're trying to gouge; second, if the pump goes out 5000 miles later they get to milk the customer for more labor cost.

As listed above, a complete timing belt job includes a lot more parts than a timing belt.

True. But if OP needs to go back in again to change out the 3 shaft seals and the oil pump o-ring (all 4 for a total of $11.62), how much labor would it cost him?

I had them change out the water pump, gaskets and seals. Even the half moon on the driver's side.
shop gives a 15k mile warranty, it just ran out for my situation.

Im thinking parts used weren't up to par or not installed properly. I'll just have to find another shop since I don't want to do it myself. I see the upper cover needs to come off (maybe the crank puller also) for me to access the leaky lower cover.

Like John said be sure to change out all the oil seals and the oil pump o-ring. My mechanic said they are known to leak on the 5sfe.

I think they can leak on any car with a timing belt.
