Question Is this rear frame rust 'undriveable'?

hey TN folks,

I just had my car up on a lift at an indy to look at a leaking exhaust and the vehicle was deemed 'undriveable'.

What do you guys think?

The shop said 2k to repair it.

And if it is undriveable, its got 170k and the engine runs great. How much can I get for it as a parts car?

Thanks in advance...

Looking at the rear frame / subframe

wow, that is pretty bad - and here i thought mine is pretty rusty. that large hole isnt suppose to be there. honestly, i would be a little weary to drive it.

as for the $2k to fix - that is absurd! you should easily be able to find that part at any salvage yard and it's actually not too difficult to replace. you will probably have to replace the 4 studs holding it to the rear and these two bolts have to be removed. that's just about it.

That's pretty bad! As was mentionned before, those 2 holes never existed from the factory. It can be done for less than 500$. The only foreseable issue is the bolt that goes thru that frame to hold the two lateral control rods are pretty long. They hit the fuel tank if you tru and remove them in one piece. I would buy new ones and simply cut off the bolt head off the old ones and put them thru the other side.

How many hours would you guys estimate for a competent shop?

DIY is an option too.

This part is called the rear k-frame, right? They seem to be widely available on ebay etc. for cheap.

All help much appreciated.

Check junkyard for a usable rear subframe.

The main problem will be all the rusted hardware. The bolt heads can be sawed/ground off, but it's the threaded holes on the chassis/axle carrier that can be a problem.

it's called a "rear subframe"

since the subframe is coming out, those center bolts will have easy access once the subframe is dropped away so no need to cut the bolts.

i believe the subframe is connected via removable studs. there was a member here that dropped the subframe to replace the lateral control arms and snapped one of the studs. IIRC they were able to get new studs from the dealer for not much money and was able to replace them easily.

in any case, i would replace this. you will get much more money for the car if this was fixed & running as opposed to selling as a parts car.

Is there a chance that rust is on these other parts as well?
