3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
wow, that is pretty bad - and here i thought mine is pretty rusty. that large hole isnt suppose to be there. honestly, i would be a little weary to drive it.
as for the $2k to fix - that is absurd! you should easily be able to find that part at any salvage yard and it's actually not too difficult to replace. you will probably have to replace the 4 studs holding it to the rear and these two bolts have to be removed. that's just about it.
That's pretty bad! As was mentionned before, those 2 holes never existed from the factory. It can be done for less than 500$. The only foreseable issue is the bolt that goes thru that frame to hold the two lateral control rods are pretty long. They hit the fuel tank if you tru and remove them in one piece. I would buy new ones and simply cut off the bolt head off the old ones and put them thru the other side.

.... This is advice for him to fix the car, and sell it?
The main problem will be all the rusted hardware. The bolt heads can be sawed/ground off, but it's the threaded holes on the chassis/axle carrier that can be a problem.
since the subframe is coming out, those center bolts will have easy access once the subframe is dropped away so no need to cut the bolts.
i believe the subframe is connected via removable studs. there was a member here that dropped the subframe to replace the lateral control arms and snapped one of the studs. IIRC they were able to get new studs from the dealer for not much money and was able to replace them easily.
in any case, i would replace this. you will get much more money for the car if this was fixed & running as opposed to selling as a parts car.

Is there a chance that rust is on these other parts as well?

Point taken, he's right
