3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Its a 1993 2.2L manual transmission with 135k on it. I use it as my commuter car.
The car will crank all day long but wont start. Pulled off the cap and rotor. Saw a ton of corrosion so I replaced it and got the car runnning. The next day, same thing. Cranks but wont start. It has good spark and is getting fuel. I tested the fuel pump and it works. New battery and the starter also tested good. Pumping the gas pedal does not help.
Side note: Earlier this week the car would not even crank. So i bypassed what I thought was the clutch switch but it was the cruise control switch (cruise didnt work anyways.) Found the clutch switch, bypassed it and it cranks now but it wont start. Both switches are bypassed. Probably irrelevant but I thought id mention it.

PSS. Timing belt and water pump are 2 months old
Please help!
Thanks
Wow -- what a bedeviling issue. I thought I knew what it was, then you brought up this clutch switch thing. That's very odd behavior indeed - maybe just a coincidence.
Let me ask you a question -- how do you know that fuel and spark are good?
I had this exact same issues with our's a few weeks ago and it turned out to be a failed ignition coil, if that helps.

Pulled the plugs and checked for spark before I replaced the cap and rotor. There was some spark. After I installed the cap and rotor its got much more spark. I cant believe that didnt take care of the problem. Plugs are wet with fuel when I removed them.
Well... so last Saturday I went out to the garage, turned the key and she started (barely). So we decided to take it for a drive. About a mile or so from my house the car stalls leaving us stranded. We walked home, got my pickup and towed the car home. Checked for spark again and there was none.
So, I'm thinking the coil was working intermittently.
