Transmission fluid change

I have a 2000 Camry 3.0 auto with 55k miles. I want to change the transmission fluid tomorrow. I found a drain bolt for the transmission on the transmission pan. How much fluid drains out of this? What's the best fluid to replace it with?

I also want to drain and fill my engine coolant. Do I have to buy a special fluid for this car?

About 3-4qts will come out. What I did was put in 3ish then start the car and go through all the gears check the dipstick and add more fluid if necessary. Any Dex III fluid will work, synthetic fluid is best.

For coolant, if you have red fluid in right now, a gallon of Toyota Long Life Coolant is what you need or Zerex Asian Vehicle Coolant.

Keep in mind you are not draining all of the fluid. Some of it is left over in the tourqe converter. If you want to make sure you get all of the dirty fluid out you will need to drain and refill a few times. On my 97 camry 4 cyl (very similar) i drained and refilled 3 times over a period of about 2 months in order to get my fluid clean because mine was pretty dark.

But hey if it isn't that dirty to begin with one drain and refill is just good PM

Drain the differential as well. There is a 10mm socket head plug, orientated 90 degrees from the transmission drain plug, towards the back of the car.

There's almost a quart in there, although the differential shares fluid with the transmission, you need to drain it separately.

But both the differential and transmission fill through the transmission dip stick tube. There isn't a separate fill tube for the differential on 6-cyl.

What I do is measure out a gallon water jug by marking it with cups and quarts up to a gallon.

Drain the fluid from the plug (10mm Hex) into a drain pan.

Then pour the fluid from the drain pan into your gallon water jug.

This will tell you how much fluid you drained. I got about 3.5 quarts or 14 cups of fluid out.

Put about that much in, always stick to the conservative lower measurement (never overfill).

If the fluid is black I would check out the DIY for flushing. And if it's been a long time since fluid has been replaced, I would drop the pan and check the magnets. My magnets were full of metal shards.

The fluid is still nice and red. It only has 55k miles on it. I guess I'll drain the pan and the other drain next to it. Thanks for all of the fast replies.
