brakes grinding after replacing brake pads

My mechanic replaced the front brake pads a few weeks ago on my 1998 Camry. Brakes operated silently the first few weeks after they were replaced but now I am hearing a grinding noise whenever I come to a hard stop. I sometimes feel a vibration in the steering wheel when the grinding sound occurs. Brakes are silent if I ease into the stop though. Toyota OEM brake pads were used and the rotors were turned. I was told that the rotors didn't need replacing but I'm beginning to wonder. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing this? Since the brakes were quiet for a few weeks after they were replaced, I don't understand why they are grinding now.

You need to pull the caliper and inspect that and the rotor to see what's causing the grinding. Could be some hardware that got damaged or something got caught up in the caliper/rotor. It's not gonna fix itself...

Sometimes brake pads can make sounds for no good reason. Sometimes lots of metal in the semi metallic compound. I also used to have problems with early ceramic pads and I could crack them within weeks of new and it sounded like the brakes were metal to metal.

But being that these are Toyota Orem and usually a friendly compound (minus, of course the original recall pads from our original 1998 gen4s) I would agree that you should pull the wheel and have a look. Or had your mechanic check it out.
