Spare Tire Storage Lid

My car came with a donut tire for a spare. The skinny, light duty tire good only for a hundred miles. That is long gone and I put a near new full sized tire in the trunk.

Is that fiberboard deck cover over the tire supposed to lie flat? I can't tell, because rain water over the years warped my fiberboard cover. Can't tell whether it is the fatness of the tire or warpage making the trunk deck look funky.

Yeah I bet it wont lie flat. I seem to always trash those on every car I own. I have an 09 Camry I bought new and some spilled cleaner and bamm it was screwed up. I took two pieces of Masonite and glued them together after cutting it to fit. It is very sturdy and no more worries. It is heavier. I bet you could do something like that. Or measure how much the tire sticks up and make a false floor for the whole thing.

Same here. Mine came with a full sized spare. Wonder when they switched to those space savers? I hate those things.

I drove 500 miles on one on my pickup at about 60 mph no problems. I don't really like them either and they are very expensive to replace if you can even find them. That is why it sucks if the storage well wont take a full size spare, bunch of shiet really.

(OP) - My Camry is a Gen 3, '94 Coupe. I might try to let a little air out of it. And since I'm getting one of the leather seats recovered at an interior shop, I'll have them make a new tire lid and replace the thin carpeting in the trunk.

And possibly some sound proofing. I hear some road noise coming from the trunk at high speed on the Freeway.

Who said Gen 3's can't be swapped to full size spares? I did it! and it works just fine, the board sits flush! The only catch is, don't expect to dump a full size spare tire with the Alloy wheel in there. Put the spare tire on a steel wheel, slip it in there. You should also remove the golden spacer on the screw that goes in the center, and remove the styrofoam pads on the backing of the board and you're set to go!

Thanks. I'll just dump the chrome steel rim and exchange for a spare rim. Never thought of that.
