3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am working on an opportunity right now to possibly buy a really clean 96' (Canadian XLE equivalent) Camry, red in colour, to replace my current top mechanical condition 93'. It has most of the stuff I've already uprgraded my 93', with. To get back to the same point, I'd just have to buy DEPO lights and do a custom HID projector system again. It has a mint grey leather interior, and alot less miles than my car, but the ATM has not been rebuilt, or replaced with a new one as mine has. Is this worth the investment? It will upgrade me to modern engine diagnostics, a small styling refresh, and a 1MZ-FE, but is it worth letting my current 100% solid project go on the market to do this? Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

Current: Of course, the OZ wheels will come to the new car!

Personally I have owned a 1994 camry xle and i love the 1mz engine. I actually just bought a 95 es300 that has the 1mz and i think it is one of the best engines ever built
Your current looks pretty damn good though. You could always buy the car, pull the engine / rebuild, and swap everything to your current. I really am not a fan of the redish color camry. (i hate my 95 color )

Keep in mind, Canadian spec LE's come with sooo many US XLE features, as I found out. Edit: Which is why I'm so happy I own a Canadian LE
It's really up to you, your current one looks clean. What is the mileage difference exactly? Does that justify the switch?

Ya it's true, up hear in Canada we didn't even have the XLE designation available until the 97', Gen4 Camry. At least locally, an LE model is almost always a highly optioned V-6 car. My car has 298,000 Km (180K miles) with the engine still strong and healthy. The red 96' has 187,000 Km (about 117K miles). The OE transmission on my car died while my folks were on vacation about 5 years ago at 217K Km., and due to the location, the only available replacement was a new unit worth about $4800 (installed). The possibility of this type of failure in this car worries me. Mind you, I just today pulled a set of twin piston front calipers off a 96' Camry with 535,000 km. (330K miles) on it! I would definitely transfer all my (applicable) custom stuff over to the 96', and a couple of good power-buff sessions would surely pull that red colour up quite a bit. The final factor would be the difference between what I could get for my current car after buying this one. It is a really tough question, especially since I really like my little green machine, and I'd hate to let it go to some member of the regular car trashing public.
