3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok, so I have a 1MZ V6. Upgrades include a CAI, aluminum underdrive pulley, hi-flow catalytic converter and straight-through muffler. Now I want to do a port & polish/gasket match on my cylinder head, throttle body, intake manifold and exhaust manifold. I've been told this can add some decent horsepower, especially when coupled with other mods. But the question is just how much horsepower can I expect from this?

I think a 5speed swap would compliment your other mods well, make the car faster and more fun to drive. The swap will give you around 20-35 whp and make the car lighter. If you are mechanically inclined think about it. Cost would be around the same as a port and polish job if you shop around and do the work yourself.

Yeah, I have briefly considered that. I like my A/T though and I really don't feel like learning to drive stick. I'm way too lazy to be manually shifting all the time lol
Oh, I forgot to add that I will be doing all the PnP work myself, so practically free except for the time I spend on it. That's what I mean by "is it worth it".

Camshafts, Valve Springs, Valves, Pistons, Rings, Connecting Rods
I've searched for aftermarket versions of these parts but I don't think they exist for a 1MZ application. Can anyone direct me to where I can find any of these parts in a high-performance variant?

Ok, if you are too lazy to drive a manual you are too lazy to port and polish your engine. There is a lot of work involved in pulling it apart and putting it back together.

IDK about your 1mz. but on my 3VZ i noticed a very lovely difference after a PNP, but i also can actually tune my engine without messing with ecu's and OBDII. i have timing changed, and AFM modded. did it add a ton of power? not really, makes it breathe a lot better, sounds beefier, climbs speeds faster and ate my already weak clutch because of the added power. combined with a ypipe (which i have yet to do) im sure it will make your numbers jump a bit. as far as internals, yeah you'll notice more power out of a PNP with better than stock internals, but for the price you wont get much. I know theres a whole thread on the 3VZ and how cams didnt do much at all but cost a fortune. I bet the 1mz has some of the same weakness's as the 3vz minus the intake. so target these areas and im sure you'll notice a bump of acceleration and more fun to your driving.
Ypipe
PnP
Headers(not the end of the world if you dont have them)
tuning(harder on 1mz than 3vz)
yes a PnP is worth it, especially if you plan on doing other mods, specifically headers/ypipe. easy WHP there.
if you want to go nuts and drop $$$ for internals then a PnP will aid that too.
overall, if you want to do anything performance with your car, PnP it, 5speed swap it(dont give me lazy or ill show you MustangGT/Dodge Charger forum) and make it get air IN and OUT as efficiently as possible.

what he said. hell, while you have most the engine apart and lighter, do the swap because you'll have half the weight and twice the visibility and access to everything.
