Testing the EGR, how much Vacuum needed?

1997 Camry 4 cylinder with 313,000 miles.
Got the EGR P0401 code some time ago. Just got around to working on it.
I hooked a vac pump to the EGR and pulled vacuum with engine running with no effect. Decided to take EGR off and clean it. WOW. It was plugged at the intake port and the small port that hooks by hose(also plugged up) to the vac modulator. After cleaning with it off the car I tried to pull vacuum but the diaphragm did not move, If moves if I move it by hand but not with my pump. If I move the diaphagm by hand and put my finger on the port it holds the diaphragm in place. I fully cleaned the EGR(really blocked up!) but maybe I dont have enough vac to activate it...My pump goes to 25 inches or so... I reset the CEL and did a quick test drive but I need to drive it much more. Any thoughts? If I need to replace the EGR where is the best place to get it price/quality wise?
Thanks Rob

If you remove the egr from the engine you should be able to clean the carbon out. Remove the pipe from the valve to clean better. Also make sure to clean the pipe too

just went thru all that problem bout 3 weeks ago.seems like i read somewhere 3-4 is all you need to kill the motor, i pulled the trigger on my pump one time and it choked the motor, the 1st numeral on my dial is five and when doin brakes it goes to 5 with the first pull,,mine turned out to be a combo of dirty egr and a new modulator. good luck to ya. mine almost drove me crazy but it sure felt good when i got it without paying somebody else to do it

Thanks, I had mine pumped up all the way around 25 or 30 and it would not make the car stumble. I know the valve is really clean but it may be time for a new EGR...

Yes, 3-5 in/Hg should be enough to make the engine run rough or stall at idle speed.

Sounds like Robs97camry has a bad EGR valve that doesn't hold vacuum. Try blowing air into the small port (use MityVac's exhaust port on top if your version has it), and see if air leaks out the bottom of the valve where you can see the diaphragm.

Thanks john, my pump will not push air. I do have an air compressor but even on its lowest power that may not be a good idea it has too much pressure. Will play around with it some in the morning.

when i was cleaning my egr i pulled vacumm to make the diaphram move up to allow more carb cleaner to flow when i sprayed thru the small metal tube on the side. if you pull a vac while you have it off and you can see that the diaphram and needle is not moving up then i would guess you have a bad egr. just my opinion after seeing mine move up with only a little effort with the vac

Even tho my vac would not move the EGR diapgham it seems to be working. I reset the CEL after doing this and 250+ miles later in all kinds of driving the CEL has remained off.
