3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
A little back story first. Picked up a 1994 Camry DX 5 speed for $650 the other day. I am using it to drive to work (45 miles each way, 4 days a week). The car runs fine, but has some issues that are pretty common from what I am reading. One issue that is really irritating the crap out of me is that the speedometer does not work (read: works intermittently).
In the morning, when I first leave for work, the speedometer appears to work just fine, for a few minutes. It then starts to jump around crazy like and eventually settles on "0" for the rest of the drive. When I get out of work in the afternoon, same thing. So, I am reading that this is probably a faulty VSS.
Problem is, I cant find it! I've watched several Youtube videos, and done countless Google searching, so please don't suggest that. What I need is someone with a 5S-FE equipped Camry to either find, or post, a picture of where this thing is located. I suspect that it is probably faulty, but it could also be the speedometer head.
If anyone is willing to help, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

it's usually on top of differential, which is in the rear (by windshield) part of transmission body. you will recognize it by an electrical plug on it which is bolted for safety.

Still can't seem to find it. Another question about the cluster. If I wanted to replace the cluster will any 4 cyl one fit my car, as long as its from a M/T car as well? Mine is so basic that it doesnt have cruise control or ABS, and every single one on eBay is for a car with these items. Thanks in advance.

Also, the check engine light is NOT on, which I have read will happen when the sensor goes bad, so is it a safe bet to replace the cluster first and then try the other?

I'm having the same problem (no check engine light) but all the other symptoms are there, No odometer or speedometer, and maybe unrelated but my gas guage isnt working.
the VSS is on top of the tranny. To the right of the motor, its a plug with cable/wires coming out. its often times covered in grease and oil. You may need a flash light and its not the easiest thing to spot, but once you do you'll know what it is. You kind of have to look standing at the drivers side headlight looking back behind the distributer in the shadows, just a electrical connection going straight down into the tranny. you need to remove the electrical connection and its a 10mm bolt. also has 3 screws surrounding
There is also another speed sensor (sometimes called the transmission speed sensor) supposedly somewhere underneath or going to the hub?
I wish one of the more experienced members could shed some light on this
Ah, this thread is for the location of the EGR VSV (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vacuum Switching Valve), not for the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is the topic of this particular thread).
