93 camry-problem with high RPMs at high speeds

Hey guys, I just recently purchased a A/T 93 toyota camry V6 XLE with 135K miles on it. Most everything seems to function well except when I am driving at high speeds ie 60+. I have noticed when I get to 80mph the RPMs are at 4000. It sems high to me, however I have never owned a camry before with a 4spd engine. If this is not normal what might I do to fix the problem? Thanks, Joel

Don't have a V6 so can't tell you, but it does sound high.

You have a 4ECT Automatic transmission

Can you feel it shift from 3rd to 4th(OD)?
From a stop watch the tach and see how many times it drops, i.e. shifts to a higher gear.

I think the 1993 had a button on the shifter to turn OD on/off, OD is 4th gear, overdrive

Google: Electronic Control Transmission (ECT)

The autoshop101 site has Toyota workshop reprints, PDF, not large downloads.
Good info on how to test these electronic shift transmissions

Thanks Ronr for the info, I googled the info and read through the pdf file. After reading it I felt stupid because I realized my O/D button was in the off position. Which would explain the high RPMs when driving 80mph. Thanks again for the help, Joel

Hope and glad you fixed the problem.

There should also be an ECT button or "power" button near the shifter.
With this on the transmission will go to a higher RPM to shift, so it will give you quicker acceleration but less MPG.
