4th Generation 00-01 external ambient temp

I have a 99 camry Le and the clock just resets but I know the 00-01 has a mode button to look at the external temp. Does anybody know/ or has anybody tried to see if its possible to retrofit the temperature sensor and replace the clock with the mode button to be able to see the outside air temperature? i know theres wiring involved but I haven't had time to see a 00 at the junk yard and look at the sensor and see how it hooks to the car to see if its possible.

I don't believe your information is quite correct.

I believe all 4th Gen Camry's have the exact same clock you have.

I believe any 4th Gen Camry that has the auto climate control has, with it, the exterior temperature sensor. Such Camry's can display the exterior temperature on the auto climate control display. See the auto climate control below from a 2000 Camry. The button on the left allows the user to change the interior control temperature, or to view the exterior temperature. It is in this unit that the exterior temperature display is, not in the clock, for 4th Gen Camry's (such as yours). The 5th Gen Camry's (2002 on up) have temperature display capability within the clock module, but again, only for those that have automatic climate control systems.

Actually the OP is right. The gen 4.5 has the temp on the clock (Up on the dash) where the gen 4.0 do not. (At least the 99 LE didn't)

I'll take a picture for reference in a few minutes.

i guess what i was asking ( since i don't have the money/time to do a auto a/c conversion) is wether its possible to get the sensor/wiring from a gen 4.5 and get it to work in my gen 4 with the 4.5 clock.

Help me a bit here. Isn't a Gen 4 Camry in the 97-99 model years, while the Gen 4.5 is in the 00-01 model years?

If so, the picture of the automatic HVAC head unit from a 2000 Camry is from a Gen 4.5, and that head unit clearly has the outside temperature function available to display on that head unit, not in the clock module. Did Gen 4.5 have several options on where outside air temperatures could be displayed?

That Auto-Climate control was only on the XLE and the Solara I believe. The LE and CE Camry's had the manual knobs for the Climate control which did not have a display for the Temp. Would be interesting to see if the clock on the XLE still had the same function (With the temp) as the CE/LE or if they simply used the gen 4 one.

OK, so we are saying that Gen 4.5 LE/CE models w/o auto-climate control had an outside air temperature sensor with the display in the clock module then? If so, I didn't know that. Does someone have access to a wiring diagram for Gen 4.5 Camry's to determine if there is some kind of module the outside air temperature sensor goes through to get an output that goes to the clock module with capability of displaying outside air temp? Or does the wiring from the outside air temperature sensor go directly to the clock module on Gen 4.5 Camry's w/o auto-climate control?

I just got a mirror off a 2003 Chevy suburban that had the compass and temp read out. It attached to the original windshield mount no problem. You just wire up power and the sensor. I even went a step higher and blacked out the airbag display. PLus its auto dimming!

What a great idea. This might even be simpler and has more stuff.
