My dad called me saying a shop wanted 1000 bucks to replace the struts on his camry. He wants to know if i'll replace them for him. I come from a world of Toyota 4x4's (lifted 2000 Tacoma) so i know nothing about his camry. It is a 92 XLE V6 camry. I just want to replace the factory suspension and keep it factory height and everything. I have my own coil compressor and tools, so do the work my self shouldn't be too difficult to do in the driveway (tell me if i'm wrong).

I did a search and came up with serviceable/nonservicable struts...So can someone set me straight on what struts i should get to restore his suspension?

Any tidbits for those who have installed them their self?

you need to have someone look at them and have them tell you if they are sealed or non sealed because I have the same year and model that you do and I have sealed on my car and did not know it till I took it in and found out the hard way. If you have sealed you can get KYB's or Ratko put the 95-96 Tokico Sealed ones on his 94 and they fit, so you probably can also use those.

if non sealed i have TRD struts im selling for cheap... brand new i need to get rid of them hehehe.. one way to check is look at the shock when u remove it and check for 4 tig welds on the removable nut if they are their then that means it is sealed and is not serviceable if they are not there means removable and u can buy my struts... in which im pretty sure is cheaper than what the dealer is goin to give ya cos i really really need to get rid of these... hehehe

humpty

p.s. it took me 10 mins or so to remove each corner (struts and springs) so it shouldnt be too hard to do... did it in my friend's house ... with impact gun though good luck man...

what should i do if i just want to replace the entire strut assembly, but retain the factory coil? All he cares about is just restoring the factory ride....at minimal cost

where is this nut i need to check for? the Camry is outside...can i see it without having to remove the wheels? Will all 4 be serviceable/nonserviceable...or just the front/rear?

Check out this thread;
http://www.toyotanation.com/viewtopic.php?topic=4785&forum=2

A quick visual inspection with the wheels still on should reveal whether it's sealed or servicable.

The photo album shows sealed/non-servicable struts. Pic #7 (cls up of sealed, welded nut). If they were NOT sealed, it would be a hex shaped nut designed to be gripped abd unscrewed with pliers.

As for replacements, give Camry300RR a shout about his TRDs or try http://www.shox.com
