USA neutral safety switch location for 97 V6 camry auto trans.

my wife's camry has an intermittent problem with starting recently
i jump-started it
the battery was replaced - the part guy tested it, told me it was on its last leg

however, it happened again this morning
i was able to get it started by jiggling the shifter

i suspect it is the neutral safety switch that is intermittent
in the course of trying to locate the switch, i have gone to the local library; they did not have the haynes manual, the local auto part stores, none for 97 camry, the local book stores, none

could someone point out the switch location, and let me know if it could be repaired/adjusted, as i read that it is absurbdly expensive to have it replaced

TIA,
toyownner

The neutral safety switch is located on the front of the transmission.

I think you can open it up and clean the contacts.

I cleaned my neutral safety switch years ago...you can use an eraser, or some fine grit sandpaper. Hopefully the contacts just haven't worn out.

But since you just have to jiggle it to get it started, try adjusting it first. It's just a matter of loosening 2 bolts, and turning it like a few degrees...take about 5 minutes to do....

Red face still need help

Help, I still could not locate the switch

normally, I'd take it to the shop, and let the pro deal with it
but not this time, I could not afford to

could someone please "walk" me to it
some detail pictures would be nice, as they say, pictures worth thousand words...

TIA,
toyownner

Thumbs up

thanks for everyone's helps

I've located the neutral safety switch, fixed the problem (hopefully)
I disassembled it, flipped the |__| blades (on the wiper) around; such that the good ends replace the worn out ones; put it back together, and readjusted it

thanks again

where is the neutral safety switch on a 1999 camry?

I am having trouble seeing the photo that someone in this thread had posted a while ago. Would appreciate someone posting it again!

As far as the problem, I have a 1999 Camry 2.2L 4 cyl. automatic and have been having start up problems for a few weeks. Does not crank at start up. I have to shift the gear from Park to Drive/Neutral/Reverse and go back into Park, sometimes multiple times before the car starts. From what I have read, it appears that the problem is in the park-neutral (or neutral-safety) switch. Where exactly is this located? I have both Haynes and Chilton manuals but they don't have decent photos/description.

Is resetting required most of the time or is it common enough for the switch to go bad? These switches are not cheap to replace as I am finding out!

Thanks for all the help.

S.

you can buy a neutral safety switch for that year at a pick a part for 40 dollars or less if you pull it out yourself. Probably 100 brand new online at most is what i would spend. and it would take about an hour to two of labor at a shop at most, but you can easily do it yourself. as for location i have the 98 v6 so i wouldnt know. ill take a look at my wifes 01 2.2 and get back to you
