Gen 3 Trunk

okay...well, ever since I can remember, my trunk doesn't stay up well when open....my dad told me that this was due to the fact that he had had an accident with the car before and from there on in it didn't stay up....

it was always kind of annoying, but it would stay up if it wasn't windy....but now with my spoiler, it just doesn't stay up at all!

I know that the two metal bars inside hte trunk are supposed to be in a certain position/angle/leverage to keep the trunk up....

can anybody provide me with specidifcs so I can try and fix mine?

thanks...

underneath the carpeting where the torsion rods disappear into are 3 holes on each side. expose this area to see those 3 holes. if the ends of the torsion rods are not on the uppermost hole than move them there by:

propping open trunk (so it won't fall and bruise your head)

grab the rod end areas with locking pliers

put them higher

if that don't work, inquire with the part dept about these parts: trunk torsion springs 64531-33010(rh), 64532-33010(lh) I don't know if these parts are original equipment, but these are the parts toyota told their dealers to install if the gen3 camry sedan with spoiler wouldn't stay open when the torque springs were adjusted all the way to the top

Merry Christmas

Hmm mine stays open but doesnt go very far when I pop it open, it looks like its still closed after I pull that trunk thing. I might try to push up the torsion rod and see if it can actually pop open hehe.

The adjustment notches are for compensating the added weight of spoiler.

I do not have spoiler on my 98, but instead I took out the plastic/carpet liner in the trunk lid.... so I do not need to westle with the bars.

My 2000 has a spoiler, and my cousin adjusted one bar to make it stay open better, after it fell on my head.

Cool

As a side note, you can put more tension on the bars to keep subs from vibrating the trunk to death, without having to add 15-20lbs of crap to hold it down!
