1999 Camry XLE V6 3.0L Trunk Space/Subwoofer

Hi all,

This is my first post, obviously.. it's nice seeing a community interested in customizing/upgrading Camry's. So rarely do I actually see them out on the road though (customized ones). In any event, I'm installing an audio system consisting of Infinity components, a 1500W MTX amp, Alpine HU; needless to say, I'm excited. One problem, I want either 2 12"s or 1 15" subwoofer.

My question, who has a 97-01 Camry and what subwoofer enclosure do they have in their trunk? When I ask what enclosure, I mean what are the dimensions. I'm looking to port a box for like I said, either the 2 or 1 sub.. my trunk is huge but somewhat oddly shaped so I can't build a box and push it all the way into the back unfortunately.

I appreciate any help anyone can offer me as it will make me choose between the 15" and the 12"s.

Also, where can I find information on installing audio equipment in my model? I saw a place that you had to pay 5 bucks a paper for, seemed kinda lame.

Go to www.installdr.com. It should help you with what you need. As far as the box dimensions for our trunk space, try a search of the audio, video forum of toyota nation.

dunno about you but make a box to meet or exeed the capacity needed by your subs.. in my gen 3 for the JL 12w3 i used to have (its all sold now) i found that i actually got best bass when it was firing into the wheel well, not into teh cabin

id say 2 12" subs.. youll want more grunt to run 2 good 15"

I have four Infinity twelve's a cap and some amps in my trunk so two twelves should be no problem for you. I personally say two twelves over 1 fifteen because I have found that that setup sounds the best. Good luck!

I've never built a custom sub enclosure nor have I done any significant work on a car. This car will be my first that I really get my hands into. Saying that, I am not currently capable of building a box like yours. ;p What's the height on your enclsoure? I was thinking I'd put the box in, push it back, then get a board to the left and mount the 1501d to it.

Best way to learn is to do. I built my whole setup for $30 minus the actuak subs and amps. Get a sheet of MDF, 1/2 inch thick for trim peices or 3/4 for actual box building. Basic handtools are all that is needed. Predrill any holes, use regular woodglue and drywall screws to hold it together. Home depot has everything needed. You can use cardboad and scissors to make templates then trace onto MDF sheet. Try to get a good scrool saw to cut the MDF. If you mess up dont worry, MDF is cheap. Take your time and when you are done you can get carpet at Home depot as well. I used boat deck carpet and held it down with 3M spray adhesive. You can also staple it around the edges. Audio is a great beginner project because even if you horribly mess up, you still have a running car and no one will know if you don't pop the trunk.

I have a gen 4 camry as well. I built a box that was about a 1/3 of the whole trunk. It took 2 people to put it in my car. I ran 1 12' and hit about 118 dB. I didnt even turn it on all the way, its just i didnt want to go deaf at the time. Ive sold it since then, so i dont have any pictures, but if the kid ever finds a way to fit the box in his car, i would gladly take pictures. I had a vented box, which was about 1 cubic foot bigger than what was recommended. I wish i had done a 15, maybe you should try it out.

PS. I also helped my cousin install 1 12 in the spare wheel well of his trunk, so he keeps the trunk space. Like what was said before, build the box yourself, its easier, and if made right, they are so much better than the premade ones at best buy/circuit city/ etc.
