Question 97 Camry Keyless Entry Replacement

Good Morning,

Re:MODEL FCC ID: GQ43VT7T; TRW ISC: 1470K1361

I have recently purchased a '97. Unfortunately, it did not come with a remote for the keyless entry. A dealer wanted to sell me a "command start" with two remotes that will also unlock my doors for almost $800. He said the older cars did not come with keyless entry. I am sure that this Camry should have keyless entry.

I have not found much on my search on this forum, but I have turned up a number of remotes on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33723

Question: Did my XLE come with keyless entry in '97? Is the code (above) applicable to my vehicle? Are programming instructions available for my make and model?

Thank you for your feedback and time.

I don't recall 97 camrys coming with keyless entry, factory alarm's but not just keyless entry's! If you wnat i can look at my 97 remote and let you know what the fcc code is (but this is going to be for factory alarm..and NOT keyless entry)

Thank you

Yes please. It may be a place to start.

I have tried two dealerships; however, I have received conflicting information.

My 97 LE did not come keyless but has power locks -- I got a Bulldog entry remote very cheap at Walmart.(~~$30) It is not hard to install . Do you not want a remote start for those brutal Winnipeg mornings?
Have you experienced a reluctance of the "double key action" to open all doors? It seems like the battery voltage or solenoids are marginal in terms of opening?

I've got a 97Cam 5S-FE LE (American Edition for what that's worth ) w/keyless entry. Hit the button on the remote - chirp chirp - and all four doors are unlocked, alarm disabled. My remote also has a secondary button that - from what I understand - can be wired to pop the trunk if the owner so desires.

^^ some of you all chuckle me up -

FYI:
keyless entry - as the way it wounds - it opens and closes your locks, may come with trunk popper. - THIS IS NOT ALARM
Alarm - it arms and disarms your starter, also acts like a keyless entry (unlocks/locks) - may also come with trunk popper.

I'm pretty much sure the OEM remotes for 97 camry DID NOT comes with a trunk popper. if someones' got them, its either a newer remote..or they added a synoid for a trunk popper built into a newstyle remotes.

Easiest way to figure out what you have on your gen4 is to look at the gauges, if there is a security light that blinks when locked/armed, then its got alarm. if not then its keyless entry!

BTW: sgullen my 97 factory alarm fcc id: GQ43VT7T ISC: 1470 K1361

What's your point? That if have the alarm you automatically have keyless entry, that you can get keyless entry w/out alarm? Mutually exclusive features or tied to each other?

I have a '97. In the car there's a module above the coin holder that blinks when I arm the alarm, says "Toyota Security". I have a remote w/two buttons - one of which is currently not configured. When I punch one the doors lock/unlock, and the alarm arms/disarms. To my knowledge nothing aftermarket was done to the car save for what I've done...

if you have factory alarm - you automatically have keyless entry (i have that on my camry)
if you have keyless entry - not don't automatically have factory alarm (i have this on my solara - no alarm, just keyless entry)

As a valet parker i've seen these on gen 4 camrys

1. a three button remote with two buttons on one side and a panic on the rear end
2. a three button remote, unlock+lock+panic? all buttons on same side
3. (i've seen this in gen 4.5's only)-> four button remotes, three buttons on the front side are arm/disarm+trunk pop; reverse side of the pad has panic.
