4th Generation Gen4 Consol removal, just a snap?

Hi... just bought a 2000 LE (that's Gen4 right?) about a month ago. Loving it so far, but I made a huge mistake. The car came with a lockable gas cap (I want to get it replaced, but hadn't gotten around to yet). Anyway, it also came sans ash tray which doesn't bother me, I'm not a smoker. So I've been using compartment in the console for storage... gum etc. Unfortunately I also conceived of the notion of keeping the gas cap keys there. That's where the big mistake comes in. Turns out there's actually a hole in the back corner of the compartment *clink clank clunk*

Yes, I'm stupid. But, before you flame away... consider that I did relate the whole story for your comedic enjoyment and didn't just ask the following:

Does the face place for the console just snap off or are there hidden screws? I got the bottom portion to move a bit (where the utility plug is, under the cig lighter) but didn't want to pull any harder for fear that I might bust something on the face plate.

So yes I'm stupid, but wasn't the laugh worth helpin me out a little with an answer?

Thumbs up

Hey. If you are talking about what I think you are, you want to get down into the compartment under your shifter and in front of that? like under where the ash tray sits

If you have an automatic, just lift up the plastic from the back-most part. closest to the cup holders. just pull up. you'll have to maneuver it to get it up and over the shifter to be able to stick your hand down in there. be careful though, cause the utility plug has a wire running from the back of it up into the front of that compartment. don't tug too ahrd on it or u'll get mighty pissed (like i did when i found out the hard way). that entire piece comes off all the way up to where the utility plug is.

lemme know if you are confused, i can take some pics of my camry. its a 97, but its the same style.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot. I figured I was gonna have to go in the other way. i.e. take the face plate off the console (stereo, A/C controls etc.) then take out something mounted there and reach down in.

So you're saying I should pull up on the center console cover? Start back by the arm rest and work my way up?

You were 100% correct. This worked like a charm. The cover came off easily and there was plenty of play in the wire going to the utility plug. Unfortunately the hole in the ash tray is in the back right corner, just the right spot to send anything that falls through it inbetween the passenger side apolstry and compartment floor. It took a while but I managed to get the rug out from under the molding without having to remove anything. Snagged the keys and got the rug back in place.

Total time: about 15 min. Thank you very much for the help.

I have been having some annoying rattles on my 2000 Camry and I wanted to take the center consol apart to see if something is loose down there. You info is helpful. My question is.... was it hard to put everything back together? Did you make any rattles by taking the consol apart? Are there some sort of clips that hold the consol cover in place?

nope. only way to make stuff rattle is if you drop something down there while you have it open

just remember most everything is plastic, if it doesn't pop off with little to moderate pressure, something is wrong. don't wanna break any clips. that sucks and WILL make a rattle since stuff won't lock into place anymore.

oh yea, when doing that, you have to pull the handbrake up and lock it into position. It will make the removal process less painful. i forgot to add that in my original post
