5sfe Engine Install

Hello, I know all of you are thinking right away, Do a search! I've tried that. I am trying to find information on how to install the stock engine 5sfe into a 94 Camry. My friend totalled his Celica which he recently installed a 5sfe with only 77,000 miles on it. I was wondering if anyone has a step by step install guide or knows of what parts would need to be purchased to do this install. My transmission is in good shape, don't want to replace that. I DO NOT want to install a different engine, so please don't start talking about all the different types of enignes out there, I see that happens in alot of the forum postings. I just need to know about what gaskets I need, what way is easier to install, what parts need to come off first and so on. I have never done an install before by my friend has with his friend so I know they know somewhat they are doing.

THanks,
Robert

I've done a engine and 2 tranny replacements on a 94 Camry. Theres a lot of steps involved.

As for a step by step guide, forget it. If you can pull and install a engine, you shouldn't have any problems doing the swap. In your case I strongly suggest having your friends do the swap for you.

For the installation, I find it easier to pull the engine + tranny together. Seperate the 2 when its out of the car. Piece your tranny together with your friends engine.

You have to use the engine wiring harness from your Camry. So you need to swap that over.

A issue that you might run into is the rear engine mount. 5S-FE for a Celica uses a different rear mount with less bolt holes. So you might have to drill and tap the back of the block.

Am I able to use the engine mount from my old engine? Also, what gaskets and such will I need? Also, does anyone know where I can get a cheap Overflow bottle, mine somehow got a hole in it.

Yes.

1. Axle seals (they fit into the differential). You need 2 of them.

2. Copper crush gasket for the fuel filter (top bolt). I'd replace the fuel filter at the same time.

3. Copper crush gasket for the power steering pump (top bolt).

4. Intake manifold gasket.

5. Exhaust manifold gasket.

6. Distributor o-ring.

Thats all I can think of for now.

Junkyard, car-parts.com, or TAP Recycling (www.taprecycling.com)

P.S. I did some searching and found a old post of mine.

where to buy 5sfe motors?

Its in no way a full step by step guide.

... And a rear main seal while you have the engine and transmission apart.

Is there any special precautions to take when pulling off the Automatic transmission?

^ Nothing out of the ordinary.

1. Drain the fluid from the tranny and differential. You need a 10mm hex socket (socket with allen wrench tip).

2. Remove the access plate. Its on the bottom between the block and tranny.

3. Remove the bolts (theres 6 or 8 bolts, I forget) from the flexplate to the torque converter. You need to rotate the crank (use the bolt on the crank pulley), so that you can get to all the bolts.

4. Unbolt the transmission from the block and seperate the 2.

5. Remove the torque converter and dump out the fluid.

When you goto reinstall the tranny to the block, pour a quart of ATF into the torque converter. Then install it onto the input shaft of the tranny. Make sure the torque converter seats all the way onto the input shaft. Spin in clockwise and push against it at the same time.

One last question, my current engine started leaking a small amount of oil the other day, it left about a 3 puddle under my car. It hasn't really leaked since. I looked under neeth and found what looks to be oil on the bottom of the transmission. It was really hard to tell but it looks to be coming from between the engine and transmission. The color of the fluid was golden/brownish like oil but I couldn't smell anything coming off of it. I did notice a very small amount of oil by the head gasket, but it's hard to tell if it came from there. Is there a seal between the trans and engine? or is there something right above that the leak could be coming from. Also, the friends engine has about 77,000 miles on it and it's from a 92' celica and I have 200,200 miles on mine and it is a early 94. Should I opt to spend the $400 bucks and swap out the engine? What do you guys think? I read somewhere that I should get a 94 or 95 engine, but I thought the 95 and 96 had a different ignition system.

THanks,
Bob

Rear main seal. It goes around the crankshaft behind the flywheel/flexplate.

97+ 5S-FE (on a Camry) has a different ignition system (DIS (distributorless ignition system)). It also has a returnless fuel system.

92 - 96 has a distributor and return fuel system.
