[engine swap] 94 1mzfe -> 03 1mzfe?

Hi, i'm total toyota noob, so please excuse my ignorance, if i manage to show any

Problem: My dad owns a 94 camry v6 auto with ~150K miles. The transmission is about to go. Now, my dad loves the car, but we decided that the only reason to work on it would be if its possible to swap a newer more powerfull engine/tranny assembly without too much work.

From searching around, i understand this same engine came in various trims in Camry, Solara, Avalon, ES300 and ES330. Now obviously the trim we are aiming for is the 210hp/220ftlbs one that came in the 2003+ camrys and 1999+ ES300 (assuming these are the same).

How hard is it to swap that engine in? I'm assuming there are 2 differences between the years: OBDII and VVTI. Again, don't know much about the car at the moment, but i'm assuming that the 94 still came with OBDI and no VVTI. How hard will it be to adapt all this in the 94 chassis? Obviously i will need the ecu. What about the wiring? Can the 94 wiring modified to work with it, or will i need to run the harness from the later models? In which case, will the accessories and everything work, or will those have to be modified somehow?

Thanks,
Igor

PS: also about the 3.3L that came in the latter solara and ES330. Is that a bored out 1MZFE? And how much work is to get that one to work?

If you are competent in electrical wiring it wouldnt be TOO difficult, a lot of work for minimal gains in my opinion. Since this isnt a swap that anyone has done, you cant really find out what will work and what wont until you actually try it. Get a manual for each car, sit down and compare the differences.

I think the new engine would fit. The only difference that was not mentioned was stroke. I tihnk they changed the stroke in the newer engine.

the 94 1mz is actually also obdII but with obdI connctores...it's like the yota techs couldn't make up their mind what to use or something

and as said, nobody's actually tried it yet- gen4 1mzs have been swapped into gen3s basically as a drop in

I would suggest that if you're going to swap in the 03 1mz, you may as well try the 3mz - which is actually more than just a bored out 1mz
- because regardless, you're going to have to do some massive rewiring and you're still swapping from a non-vvti to a vvti engine

so you may as well go all the way and tell us how it goes....

good luck

so the 3.3L is the 3mzfe correct?

Yeah thats what i was afraid of - noone tried that The idea was to swap a low mileage engine and boost the performance abit with as little sweat and blood as possible. But without someone to turn to for advice, this will probably come out a bit overwhelming with questionable results. And the engine/tranny set is $2.5K as well.

With this swap looking that way, chances are i won't attempt it. But who knows, i'll keep you guys posted if i decide to go through with it.

If you want to "boost" the performance, go for the 1mz and supercharge it. The 1mz from 1997-2001.

if you want to get the gen4 1mz and then blow it, just remember the fitment issues and think that all out before you tackle the project....but it'd be easier if you're doing the swap as it is....you can relocate all the things you need with the engine out, and change mounting points of needed too

It fits physically. The only difference with anything that doesn't seem to fit right is the charcoal canister for emissions. Everything else seems to fit fine. Wiring is another issue.
