'97 gen4 Camry airbag light stays on, dealer can't reset. Plz Help! (searched forum)

Hello, I know the airbag topic has been discussed to death, but all the threads I found are either tutorial on DIY resetting the airbag, or suggestions to bring the car to dealer.

Yesterday I brought my car to the dealer for airbag reset and also airbag diagnosis ($60) to make sure everything is fine. Later I received a call from the service advisor saying the airbag could NOT be reset due to some unknown reason. He told me a detailed electrical diagnosis is necessary to figure out the problem, and it will cost $370 just for the diagnosis! (it also means I wasted $60 on a stupid "basic" diagnosis). He told me (threaten?) that as long as the airbag light stays on, the airbag will NOT function and I'm risking my life driving it. I declined his offer because I wasn't sure if he was telling the truth or just an ordinary dealer trick trying to empty my wallet.

What should I do!? =(

info about my car:
My car has no modification and no accident. The airbag light came out after a service at a local autoshop. They said they don't know why the light came out, they told me the airbag "should work fine" even though the light is on, and suggest me to have the dealer reset the airbag if I don't like to see the light stays on.

well, the dealr is right when they said that the airbag won't work when the light is on, and neither will the passenger one, since they're hooked up in serial

I would say, take it to an independent toyota specialist shop to get the diagnostic done....

I would personally just leave it tho....I had a non-functioning airbag for about half a year, got into an accident, and hey...it was probably cuz it wasn't working, or else it would have deployed and caused me even more of a headache
