97 camry idle problem

Hi, i have a 97 camry 4cyl with a weard engine idle problem. The idle speed is normal most of the time but when the tranny is put on d the idle drops down a little and even more when the a/c is on but the engine never dies, and it comes to normal speed when the tranny is put back on n or p. it is more noticible during night time when the lights dims a little. the egr valve is operating normally and i even tried disconnecting it with no effect. is it the idle speed control valve or something else. please help

It is normal for your idle speed to drop by 100-200 rpms when you switch into drive from Park. How much does it drop? Is it any more than about 100 to 200 rpms?

i have already tried cleaning the TB with some effect . it was way too low before about 200 to 300 rpm sometimes and the a/c woudnt start but that was rectified after cleaning the tb . yes the engine shakes when put on d and a/c on. my friend has a similar make and model but his rpm stays normal whatever the situation. it goes down a little bit but returns to normal instantly. mine doesnt.

Have you also replaced the distributor cap, wires and plugs? they may be worn. also put in some fuel injector cleaner, you may also have a cluought air filtrer. if not the probably your Idle Air Control motor may be going bad or your idle spped screw if any is incorrect.

keep us updated.

if you still need need help i will be glad to go thrugh my haynes manual

lift the idle for a temporary solution on the throttle body (should be a screw to adjust it). could be a tps or air sensor. g'luck

i will put some fuel injector cleaner today and then go for the screw. it still has the factory yellow paint on it . the spark plugs have been changed recently and there is no distributer . there are two separate coils with two plugs wire attached to each. my last option is to replace IAC after trying all the above suggestions .

Thanks a lot guys and will keep you all updated.
