3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Looking for a Gen3 Camry. Want to know personal experiences and recommendations for engines. Should I go with 4 or 6 cyl. Is there much difference in power and fuel economy.
LE or SE
I would say just go straigt for the v6....the 4banger gets better mileage of course, but when it comes down to it, you'll probably end up complaining about the lack of power since the car is fairly heavy.
the v6 is ALOT more powerful, and on a full tank (60L), I can get cruising on a highway 600Km plus a little bit more. but generally, mix of in-town and highway, about 500km

i did a v6 swap... i found the I4 to be a piece of shit... the v6 is much better and mine was actually better on fuel, cause it was std. i converted I4 auto to V6 standard.
The older gen3 v6 (92-93) has a very torquey truck based 3vz-fe engine and the newer gen3's (94-96) have a slightly more powerful and newer 1mz-fe engine. Another difference I believe is OBD-I v. OBD-II engine computer. I have driven both cars and I think the newer gen3's are smoother.
I've also noticed the fuel consumption to deteriorate considerably over the years, so you may not get nearly as good fuel consumption as a new car.
Have to say go with the V6. Like was mentioned there are two different V6 engines tht were offered inthe Gen3. You should be able to look in the sticky's at the top of the thread to give you more info on these two engines.

V6 V6 V6!!!! But if you do get the I4, get a manual tranny, and slap a turbo on...If you can't live with an auto tranny, I wouldn't reccomend a 94-96 V6. I own a 94 V6 and it has plenty of power, and an extremely smooth automatic transmission.
get the V6, ive driven both and the v6 feels much more solid. mpg should be pretty close, in my case anyways, my i4 gets 18-19 mpg city, 20 if im lucky.
