4th Generation 1998 2.2L Camry LE Rotors!

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry LE 2.2 Litre. I was just wondering what was required to remove the front rotors. I removed the lug nuts and the brake caliper; after that I can't see anything else needing to be removed except for maybe the entire axle nut which i doubt keeps the rotor on there.

Basically all I am asking is after the caliper and lug nuts, should the rotor be able to come off? Thanks for any response, hopefully someone knows before this Saturday. I plan on removeing them on saturday, taking them to a machinist to get them trued and throwing them back on.

Chris

You have to remover the caliper mounting bracket first. Toyota calls this the "torque plate" if you have a Toyota manual. (Incidently, you can use the generation 3 Toyota manual at the top of this forum. The generation 3 and 4 front brakes are the same.) There are 2 17MM bolts holding it on. Remove those and then the rotor should come off. If it is stuck on the hub due to rust, and most are, there are 2 threaded holes near the center of the rotor. Screw 2 corresponding screws in to those 2 holes and lever the rotor off. Screw them inward evenly and eventually you will hear a pop when the rotor breaks free of the hub. That is what those 2 threaded holes are for. Taking off the rotors is fairly easy.

Good luck.

Correct!! If, when you say, you "took off the calipers" you only took off the active half, then you're still needing to remove the stationary portion. (The two 17mm bolts in quesion)

If you have and it's still not coming off, just a little elbow grease & they'll come off. Believe me.......I'm a master at '98 Camry brakes. I go through about a set per year, so needless to say I can do them in my sleep!!!!!

Yes.........actually, by removing the mobile part of the caliper you needed to use 2 wrenches (14 & 17 opposing eachother to loosen).......so you actually did more work removing the moving half of the caliper than if you had just removed the whole thing.......

After the tires' off, just stick your head inside the fender well there and look on the backside of the rotor and you'll see one large (17mm) bolt head.

Then if you swing your head (still inside the fender well) to the front of the car and feel with your hand in the same position at the bottom (but, again, also on the back side of the rotor) you'll notice there's another 17mm bolt head.

Remove both of those bolts........(I usually use a deep socket 'cuz the rubber brake line gets in the way typically)........and you can lift the caliper up & away or let it dangle or rest gently on the ground while hanging and your rotor should dang near fall off into your hands!!

i suggest using a breaker bar so you dont strip the bolt and have to wait to go to toyota to get a new one. putting the same one on just screws u over in the long run.
