3rd Generation Cost of replacing V6 on a '93?

I'm thinking of picking up a 93 Camry V6 that's not running. Owner says engine overheated, so I'm thinking worst case scenario that the entire longblock needs to be replaced.

How much are decent condition used 3VZ-FE longblocks? Do you guys think the shortblock and heads are ok and only the headgasket needs to be replaced and only the heads need to be remachined?

How much work are the headgaskets on this engine, and how much work is an entire engine replacement?

I also noticed the factory service manuals here are for the 1MZ-FE - are there any for the 3VZ-FE?

Thanks!

Why not just get a JDM 3vz engine off ebay for 750 bucks + shipping? That way you have an engine with considerabley less mileage and you wouldnt have to worry about remachining heads or anything. It sounds like that engine is trashed anyways (for the previous owner)

My $.02

Won't know till you tear it apart.

Depends on your skill and knowledge. Can't really say for sure.

Have you tore a motor apart or done a engine swap?

Well, The 3UZ is an iron block, so do iron blocks usually go bad with overheating? I'm just trying to find out if it's easy or not for this particular block to get damaged through overheating. I would just assume the heads are warped anyway.

I've never done an engine swap or worked on an engine before, but that's one of things I hoped to learn during this process.

The most involved things I've done before are front main seal/timing belt on a 2JZ-GTE and clutch/flywheel on a 240SX.

^ The heads will get damaged before the block will.

Cast iron dissapates a lot of heat. Its almost impossible to cut it with a torch or weld to it cos it dissapates so much heat.

Like I said above, you won't know till you tear the motor apart.
