3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello folks, new member here from California I've joined so I can ask you folks a question about my friend's Toyota Camry V6 (all I know is that it is a 94 Camry with a 6 cylinder engine & automatic tranny). It has a vibration problem, even when the car is not moving, there is a vibration. Some car mechanic has told her she needs a new transmission. So I am wondering if the vibration is due to some problem with her automatic tranny. Have you guys ever heard of such a problem? I have not yet checked out the car myself, I'd have a better idea when I do, but I wanted to ask you folks even with sketchy info.
welcome to TN!
they may have told her she needs a new tranny because shes a girl...
more likely i'd guess its the engine mounts that need changing.
does it vibrate more when shes in gear vs in neutral?
check the dogbone mount next to the crankcase, check the rubber for any cracking, since correct me if im wrong, but is the dogbone the one that usually starts to go first? there are other mounts too, like the tranny mount that may need to be changed as well.
vibration could aslo be caused by a bad pcv valve and poor spark plugs. if it's time for a major tune-up, it may help take the vibration away as well.

Thank you for the replies guys I asked her about vibration with the stick in the park or neutral position. So the vibration happens when it is in neutral. Anyhow I sent her to another repair shop, this time they said the car needs a tune-up (needs the distributor cap & cables replaced. He said it does not need new spark plugs ???), and he would do it for $450. That seemed a lot to me. Does it sound right to you? How much should it cost to replace the distributor cap & cables etc (minus the spark plugs)? and what kind of tune-up is it when you do not replace the spark plugs? I mean if the engine is running like a bag of bolts so I'd have thought the spark plugs would be shot, so I said to her, (over the phone, if I had been there I'd have a better idea about the situation), let's take it somewhere else. So how much should we expect to pay for a major tune-up?

i thought 94 v6 is distributorless, does it have a distributor cap?
You need to go to the mechanics shop and get your car immediatley and leave as quickly as possible. In the process tell them you will never be back again. All you have to do is open the hood on a 94V6 and see that ther are no wires or distributor on the car. If they are telling you it needs those they do not need to be in business as someone is going to get screwed big time at some point.
