The difference in gen 4's and gen 5's

Well to start off, I work at a Toyota Dealership and I have access to many cars on the lot. Now, I've never been in a gen 5 four cylinder 5 speed camry before so I decided to take a test drive. I own a gen 4 four cylinder 5 speed camry so obviously i've been in in before. Man oh man, did i feel a difference!!! do gen 5 have more horsepower than the gen 4's do? It seems as though gen 4 has a bit more torque down low but gen 5 really picks up after 3500rpms. It doesn't seem to run out of breath after 5500rpm either.... you can bark second a hair longer than the gen 4's can. i was really surprised at how much the gen 5's feel very different than the gen 4's.

Ok wait... you work at a dealership and you don't know that Gen 5's have more hp than Gen 4's??? ...Every Gen had more HP than the previous ones to compensate for the increased size and weight.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.

Actually, Gen 4 and Gen 5 are basically the same as far as weight goes. Possibly partly attributed to the steel block in the Gen 4 vs an aluminum block in the Gen 5. The Gen 5 also has VVTi which helps the engine breathe better so it can develop more power and flatten the torque curve. The Gen 5 is also more aerodynamic, 0.30 for Gen 4 vs 0.28 for Gen 5.

Gen 4 4 cylinder - approx 3150 lbs, 130 HP, 150 ft lb torque
Gen 5 4 cylinder - approx 3150 lbs, 157 HP, 160 ft lb torque

To answer the power increase around 3500 rpm. That's the VVT-i kicking in. Basically, yeah, the Gen 5 I-4 engines are rated at 160 HP on 91 octane, as the Gen 5 V6 are only 3.0L rating around 210 HP, where the Gen 5.5 V6 are 3.3L rating around 224 HP or so.

Basically, VVT-i (Variable Valve timing with injection) helps regulate the power input when you drive. It doesn't use up all of it's valves when you drive, but when the engine detects you're accelerating with the pedal down pass half way, the VVT-i opens up the remaining valves and gives you that extra power you need. After you're done, it simply shuts it off again and helps you regulate your mileage and power. So all in all, it helps the engine stay reliable and give you better mileage.

Uh...I hope you're joking you just explained TVIS..

The fuel requirement for the 2AZFE is 87 octane, why would it the HP figures be derrived from using 91 octane?

Haha, touringcamry is right, Phil. Its rated at 157hp at 87 octane, not 91.

the gen four has an older, smaller displacement engine. Of course it has less power.

Variable Valve timing with intellgence. My understanding is that it control how long the intake is open. Dual VVT-i also controls how long the exhaust is open,

I know that. Since it's a higher octane, I figured it'll raise the figures a bit.
