I just had my '92 Camry on inspection and now there's a few minor issues that have to be fixed to keep it street legal.
1) Clean motor
2) Fix a rust patch
3) Replace strut insulator rubber parts
4) Remove a sticker...
5) Fix foglights
6) The "R" on the dashboard is litten up constantly when I have my lights turned on.
Points 1-5 are no problems, they're straight forward, but this last point boggles my mind, as I can't find anything about it on the internet so far. According to the maintenance manual, the "R" light is directly connected to the Park/Neutral position switch (manual BE-62) so it should be independent of having the headlights turned on or not.
... Can't absolutely say what would cause the R to light up. However, it may be prudent to pull the NSS, clean the old silicone dielectric grease out, spray everything with electrical contact cleaner, including the top electrical plug. Use emery cloth to clean the various copper contact surfaces. Add new silicone dielectric grease. Also lube the rubber perimeter gasket, located between the two case halves. This keeps out road moisture.
There is a useful DIY link here.: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/1...ral-safety-switch-cleaning-5.html#post8341521
There are some pics at the very last of that link.
If cleaning the NSS doesn't fix the problem, then you probably have a crossed wire ... something shorting out someplace. However, the NSS is worth a try, since it needs to be cleaned after a lot of years. This will help your start-up ignition and several other items. ... Not a major project, takes 2 or 3 hours to complete.
I did fix the problem - the litten "R" wanted to signify that the reverseing lights were not working. What's funny about this is that it's not mentioned in any manual I've flipped through so far.
The problem was that the ground connection to the trunk was broken and that caused all the lights of the trunk to stop working (fog lights, reverse lights, licence plate lights). I'm fortunate that this fix got rid of three out of seven issues at once. Now it's just the straight forward stuff to go.
Thanks for the infos about the switch though, will keep this on mind in case I get problems with starting the car.
Although it is really nit picking on a very high level, the good side to this is that if you buy a used car that has been registered in Switzerland all its life, it will be equally well kept in shape. Not that it's worth that much compared to being a bit more pragmatic...
In any case, the Camry will be in mint condition when the rust has been repaired. Not bad for a 22 years old car.
