need advice about 1998 Camry CE

First of all , thank you for your past advice on my father's 2001 Camry. It did turn out to be a malfunctioning speed sensor.
I have a '98 Camry CE with about 125000 miles on it. I have not had any major repairs. My father does all the maintenance on it. Currently, I have a problem with the shift from P to R or P to D feeling stiff. My car has an automatic transmission.
I am contemplating buying an '06 Camry Standard with automatic. But, I still like my '98.
Do you think I can still get at least another year out of it? What are the major things that should be checked for safety. I do a lot of long distance driving.

engine sludge is a major issue with those model camrys. trust me i know, i had 103000 kms, just 3000 over warranty and i shot the cam lobe right out the block. the bastards didnt even pay the tow. but leave it to me to go buy a 2002. i blew up the 1997, dropped a new motor in, but it was some kind of japan spec and could never work right with the original auto tranny. so i traded it in got a new one.

i found out that 2002 (which is the same as the 06 except the tranny and cosmetics) had a complete changeover, everything redone and new engineering and thats why i got one.

Sounds like a shift cable or linkage problem is all.
