P0441 and P0446 2001 Camry 4 cylinder

Hello,

I'm checking on this for a friend of mine. She has a 2001 Camry with a 4 cylinder and auto getting codes P0441 and P0446 every once and a while. She occassionally has the engine light come on and normally has the dealer pull the codes, but at $75 a pop, when I found out she was doing this I told her I'd do it for nothing with my handheld Innova 3030 the next time it happened. She said the light came on again last week and she tightened the gas cap as the dealer has always done. She never brought it to the dealer this time, and planned to bring it to me. The light stayed on until just this morning when it went back off by itself on her way to bring me the car. I read the codes anyway and they were P0441 and P0446.

I've done some searches and it appears the earlier camry's have TSB's from '96-'98, and issues with gas caps and VSV valves. Do these issues still apply to the '01 Camry, or is there yet another issue that could be going on? I couldn't find anything real specific for an '01 Camry and a 4 cylinder.

Thanks (and I apologize if this is a rediculously common and reduntant type of post).

Thanks,

Ya, in a way. The common fix being the vsv near the canister. There are 2 vsv's for the EVAP system, one near the canister and one near the air cleaner. The vsv near the canister has been known to test good but the MIL comes back anyway. Replacing it seems to be the fix. Replace the vsv, run the evap monitor to completion w/out the MIL coming on to verify the repair. Of course you have to check all vac lines, fuel cap press. test, etc. before replacing anything. HTH.
