Gen5 Gen 5.5 Factory Stereo

FYI- I got a factory stereo from a 2005 Camry and tried to plug it into a 2006 Camry, and the plugs are different.

A little background: The goal was to integrate an iPod into the 2006 Camry. All the info I read from most every manufacturer for an iPod integration kit said that I needed to have a factory stereo with a "DISC" button. This indicates that the stereo can control a CD Changer if so equipped. My 2006 Camry factory stereo does not have a button labeled "DISC", but has a button labeled "CD". This is the JBL 3-in-1 stereo. I just assumed this meant my factory stereo could not control a CD Changer. I proceded to purchase a 2005 factory stereo on ebay which had the DISC button only to find that Toyota had changed the plugs from 2005 to 2006. The good news is that I learned that the 2006 JBL stereo can indeed control a CD Changer so I was able to use the iPod integration kit.

So if anyone else out there is looking to get one of these iPod kits and sees that you need a DISC button, don't believe it. At least not if you have the JBL 3-in-1 factory stereo.

By the way, I got the Peripheral iPod2Go and it works great. One of the most important features I was looking for was the fact that this kit does not lock out the controls on the iPod so you can still navigate using those controls. Many of the other kits lock the iPod controls out and require you to navigate the iPod from the head unit and the response is sluggish to say the least.

So now I have my iPod mounted to the dash and connected through the factory head unit with CD quality sound.

Anyone want to buy a 2005 camry factory head unit? single CD/AM/FM with CD changer control. I'll also have a 2006 camry factory JBL 3-in-1 head unit for sale as soon as I get the Eclipse AVN5435 navigation unit.

sasair,
have you tried the USA Spec aux input kit, available at circuit city. The kits add an rca auxillary input to any factory unit for ipod or other media input using speaker 3.5 jack. FYI that most kits will not work with JBL or navigation style headunits (premium sound).

No I have not tried the USA spec aux input kit. The Peripheral kit works great on my JBL unit. Plus with the peripheral kit, I can control the ipod using the steering wheel controls as well as the factory radio controls if I desire. All the kits hook up to the same Changer control plug, so as long as you have that plug, you are golden.

$50 bucks plus shipping to where ever you are. Thats what I paid for it. The unit looks great, no scratches that I noticed. I can post pictures of it if you are interested.

SASAIR, can you use the audio controls on the head unit to change songs and such? and can you see the ID3 Tags displayed on the factory head unit?

Using the Peripheral iPod2Go product you can use the controls on the factory head unit to track up and down, and search songs as well as use the steering wheel controls, if you have them, to track up and down. You cannot see the ID3 tags on the factory head unit because it isn't text capable. Thats why I have my iPod mounted on my dash. Also so I can navigate to different playlists using the iPod controls.

cool thanks..
i wanted to ask because i think that there is a company that makes an ipod adapter that will display ID3 tags on the factory one. on top of controlling next song and such on the factory head unit. you can press 1-5 and slect the playlist from the factory head unit. this way..ipod can be hidden.

That is true, but the head unit has to be able to support text display, and the Toyota head units do not support it. Also you are correct that some iPod adapters will allow you to navigate to your first 6 or 10 playlists just like if you had a 6 or 10 disc changer. I don't know about you, but I have alot more than 10 playlists on my ipod and I want to be able to access them all. With the other iPod adapters, they mostly all will lock out your iPod controls so you have no way of accessing the other playlists. I believe I have the most versatility with my setup while still using the factory head unit.

Of course my plan is to get the Eclipse AVN5435 Navigation headunit and when I get that I will get the Harman Kardon Drive + Play to control the iPod and that is supposed to be the best setup for iPod control. I can't wait for christmas!
