2006 Camry – Hard/Weird Shifting

Our 2006 Camry shifts weird; at least it seems weird to me. If we are going down hill and just kinda coasting, say at 65, and just barely apply the brakes, the tranny downshifts. The rpms jump from about 1,600 to 2,600 or so. I have never driven an automatic that downshifts like that when coasting. Is that normal?

I used 65 mph as the example, but it really does it at about any speed.

Thanks for any help,
BH

It happens when going down hills. This allows less use of the brakes and thus saving them. This happens in my 04, but it upshifts when you give it gas.

Whew! I was about to take my '06 in for the same thing! I have to admit the accelerate-by-wire was a bit different when I first got it.

This happend to my 05 camry also. After about 7000 miles my c.e.l. went on. It was a speed sensor in the trany. They changed that and it shifts soo much faster and smoother. i would get that checked out if i were you. i beleive it was code p0500 or something like that.

[sarcasm] because we all know brakes cost more than transmissions [/sarcasm]

My 05 does it too and it annoys the hell out of me, I WANT TO USE THE FUCKING BRAKES GOING DOWNHILL!! This is what brakes were made for, unless you are carrying 10,000 lbs in your trunk there is no reason to abuse the trasnmission every time you brake downhill.

I wish Toyota gaev us a way to turn this shifting pattern completely off.

I agree with you 100%. I just barely touch the brakes and CLUNCK! The damn thing drops into passing gear! I hate it. I would have never bought it if I knew it did that.

I wonder if the dealer can reprogram the computer to turn that crap off?

Maybe its supposed to downshift when your slowing down/attempting. My aunt/uncles Vue does that, i'll be slowing down for a stoplight and the tranny will downshift. It's probably just normal function.

Does anyone else have any more thoughts on this problem? I’m taking it into the shop next week. I’m afraid they will just tell me that it is “normal”, whether it is or not.

Do all 2005/2006 Camrys downshift when lightly touching the brakes? Ours downshifts hard to the point of the engine rpm’s jumping from 2,000 to 2,800 and the vehicle decelerating very noticeably. This almost always happens when we are going down a hill and lightly touching the brakes just to maintane our current speed.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

It's normal.. It's a "feature" of the 5spd auto. It seems that now the tranny has 'learned' my driving style so it doesn't do it as much. I do have to say though - that it does help especially when I'm on the freeway on the way home. The offramp I take is short and there's a turn so I always turn off the O/D to slow down. My '05 negates that need.

Anyway. I wish there was a way to turn it off but eh..nothing much we can do.
