Got it!

OK, here is my 446 story. I believe it has some value because I finally got it fixed. But it was not easy. Camry 99 I4, Toronto, Canada.
  • Check Engine light is on.
  • Went to my mechanic. He read the code P0446 (no other codes) and recommended to go to Toyota to get evap. emission system test to pinpoint the problem.
  • Went to Toyota and did the test ($100). The verdict - VSV valve on the charcoal canister.
  • Replaced VSV valve ($150) and rest computer. 20 km later the light is on again. After reading through this forum I was ready for this…
  • Back to Toyota. They ran the test and everything seems to be OK. Reset computer and said that it should help. 20 km later the light is on.
  • Toyota. Re-fit vacuum links, re-tested. 20 km later the light is on.
  • Toyota. Replaced vacuum links ($40). 20 km later the light is on.
  • Toyota. Re-fit vacuum links, replaces some other valves (no charge). 20 km later the light is on.
  • Toyota. Swap computer with one of mechanics just to exclude it. 20 km later the light is on. Computer is OK.
  • Toyota. Replaced charcoal canister ($400, gave me good discount, I’m paying only for parts) because there is nothing more to change. The promise was that if it wouldn’t help they wouldn’t charge me. But it helped, 1500km later the light is still off.
The bottom line. P0446 code is not a mystery, there is always a real problem behind it. But even with original Toyota diagnostic tools it’s very difficult to find the problematic element(s). Judging by what I’ve read about it, in 90% of cases it’s either one of the valves or the canister. It’s worth to deal with official Toyota because after initial diagnostics they did not charge me for labour at all, I believe otherwise there would be few thousands dollars of labour charges. Thank goodness the dealership is right across the street from my home And, of course, it’s a shame for Toyota to have such a poorly designed system so it cannot be diagnosed by official dealer!
