5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I bought my Camry SE with the larger 3.3L V6 in hopes of getting a comfortable commuter car while also getting performance. Unless I am flooring it from zero, I am unhappy with the transmission lag shifting between gears in normal-to-slightly aggressive driving. I know there isn't anything particularly wrong with my transmission because a friend has the LE 3.0L V6 with the same complaint. It would have been nice for Toyota to have had a "sport" button on the SE (i.e. Sport Edition) to make the transmission and suspension tighter as needed.
I've searched and can't find a specific Camry 3.3L V6 performance chip. The chips I find are generic to any car and I doubt there effectiveness. Then I wonder if increasing horsepower and torque will have any bearing on the transmission/RPM performance.
Since I am not a mechanic nor enthusiast, I would appreciate any advice.
an aftermarket piggy back is your only current, ... erm, affordable option.
as for the transmission, live with it. or get a 5 speed.

One question, is that kick down cable adjustment doable on the gen5? I noticed some difference when I did it on my gen3. If so, that could make you car shift quicker, and rougher, for free.
Remember though, you bought a Camry, it's by no means a performance vehicle. You could, on the other hand, trade yours in when the 07s come out. If you use premium fuel, you'll get 280hp.
Assuming regular unleaded, comparing the 2004 and 2007...
The 2004 SE 3.3 V6 has 210 hp at 5600 rpm, 220lb-ft at 3600 rpm.
The 2007 SE 3.5 V6 has 268 hp at 6200 rpm, 248lb-ft at 4700 rpm.
However, they still don't have either a "sport" button nor a triptronic/auto-to-manual shifting transmission so the tightness between normal gear shifting is questionable (i.e. same tranny for all Camry models). Thus, I would assume the transmission is set to "smooth granny" mode.
its not too terribly difficult to rewire up the transmission shifting soleniods to go when you want them to but youll need to know your way around electronics, =)
also youll have to live with permanently tiptronic shifting your car all the time =)

perhaps the gen 5 has a service bulletin posted about transmission lag? I was told my 05 highlander has an update that would make the acceleration lag and transmission lag smaller.

i belive a few ppl have gone back to the dealer and corrected it but it makes no difference.
the stock transmission ecu is just too slow (just like a PC at home is too slow to play games) i guess =)

Thanks for the TSB tip! These look interesting but wish I could find out more without paying money.
