5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So here is the story: My uncle just bought a 2006 Camry. The car is absolutely beautiful, except for the hesitation. The 04-05 solara and 02-05 camry suffered from the same hesitation, and a TSB was issued which reflashed the ECU. According to Toyota, all 2006 cars have been given this flash already, however the car still suffers from hesitation.
He has spent time with a senior tech, Toyota corporate, and finally with a factory representative. He's even taken a brand new 06 Camry off the lot, and it drives very similarly. Although they were very sincere, their explanation was padded with BS. They said it is so you can't floor the car and ruin the gas mileage. They also said that it is to reduce emissions.
At around 10-15MPH, the car takes 1-2 seconds before it starts to go again. This is very dangerous.
Has anyone experienced this on their 06 Camry? I'm trying to figure out if the problem is isolated to the 1mz he has in his Camry or if its universal for the whole platform.
I'm getting the impression that Toyota doesn't know how to make a car work well with electronic throttle.
Get this one! My wife bought an '05 Camry SE V6 loaded to the gills and has the hesitition problem as well. Talked to the head tech at my dealership and he said that the car is designed this way because hold on, hold on this gets good! People in Japan drive differently then in America! I almost fell on my ass when told this!

yeah, its the electronic throttle drive by wire and is normal. its not implemented very well, but i think the system is supposed to adjust to your driving style eventually.

although thats quite true,
but yeah like mentioned its the fly by wire throttle. ecu is simply not fast enough. youll get used to it after a while though, learn to ease on teh gas, not step on it.

My 2005 LE now has over 6000 miles and I've learned to better predict this odd behavior. Yanks is very much right about the slow speed response. Thats where it shows up the very worst. If you really want to see how ugly it can get, go to an intersection where you have to make a very sharp left hand turn, slow way down, let off on the brake start through the turn and try to gradually accelerate through the turn completion. Good luck...my car will take a full 1-2 seconds before it responds...don't try to force it or it'll jerk your head off when the computer finally figures out its time to go. I don't know if any of the rental companies are using these in their fleets, but my bet is that if they are, there have been some accidents because of this. Navigating through parking lots, slowing down and then resuming speed through intersections, and areas with speed bumps will really show how awful this "fly by wire" mess is... I'm sure hoping that there will be an eventual fix. Seems like every time I just start to really enjoy driving, this little gremlin pops up and spoils the experience.
Is this more evident with the V6 Camry? I have an I4 and the hesitation is there but it's not 1-2 seconds like some of you are describing. I would guess maybe a half second. When I first got the car, it took some getting used to. I'd step on the gas and the car would jerk forward because by the time the car caught up with me, the gas pedal would be far down enough to jerk you back.
Now that I've been driving it for a few months, it's not a problem. I've learned to compensate for it. I've read many times before that it's worst in say a parking lot - but it's not too bad. It's nowhere near as responsive as my mom's gen 3.5 [first time I drove it after a few months, I flew down the road cuz the pedel is so soft and responsive] but barely noticeable.
My car was built 12/04 I think, it probably doesn't have the new ECU flash. Re: rental companies having fleets of these - Hertz does. I bought mine from them.
