yet another 07 cam SE: testdrive

got bored yestereday while having my altys windows tinited so we went by the yota dealership..

they had 5 total 07s in stock: 2 xle v6s, two le 4cyl and one SE V6...
took a look at the SE and ill giv eyou my impresions..

LOOKS: to sum it up easily, the pictures just dont do justice.. it looks quite nice and refined and fairly sporty.. i thought it was ugly as hell in pics and the emblem was hideous.. (well it still is bad) but when you see the car in person you cant help but appreciate factory projectors. the body lines are quite nice to me except the little curve on the front doors from bodyline meeting fenderwell.. that makes ti look dented...

INSIDE: geeze i thought it would big.. it felt damn small.. the SE i drove had cloth seats... the material felt TCish.. to be honest.. a bit cheap.. the seats actually on all grades looked really improved from the boring ones we had in all previous gens.. (so plain) now they give it a bit more boyracer look... the SE also had PLASTIC backing to the seats.. WTF!!! that is a cheapo way of making seats.. i see kids kicking them and scraping up that black plasticv (interior is black)when i nthe front seat, all the way back, the back is quite cramped. though having reclining rear seats is a very very nice touch.. it still felt toyota spent more money on the looks of things rather than materials.. most of the plastic on the inside looked cheap, and the door panels are mostly hard plastic now rather than the softouch vinyl of previous gens...

RADIO: alrighty.. who thinks that dash felt big??? I DO!!! they made the dash specifically the center stack too damn wide.. it takes away from room in the front making it feel slightly cramped... controls were a bit odd for me. and i couldnt really get the feel of the silver lining everywhere.. it annoyed me and forget an aftermarket radio.. thats gon be a beeyatch to replace and find a matching peice....(just like the gen2 solara)

trunk: WTF THIS IS A CAMRY.. the altima that i bought had a much larger trunk.. im sorry but it made me think icould fit two bodys in there.. the camry feels like id be lucky to get 1.5 in.. lol..

DRIVING: TCS SUCKS A LEFT NUT ON THAT CAR.. i floored it pretty damn hard and my alty would outdo it in every way on acceleration.. it still felt slow and had a hard time finding gears.. that 6 speed is mostly show not go... dropping it from 40 to get up to 80 it took about 3.5 seconds (yep a friend timed) before it found the right gear (rowing thru the gears instead of dropping in auto?) not good.. suspension is quite nice and slightly sport... you could feel a lot of bumps in the road, and a bit of butterfly in the rear (4 of us in the car)....
manual mode is quite nice but it feels like it needs a true manual to really enjoy the 2gr..

overall: the car is nice and refined.. quarters are cramped on the inside (side by side with my SER.. and my SER felt much faster and responsive.. the 6 speed has its problems with finding gears in auto mode.. manual mode has much to be desired..

toyota wanted to add more sport to the car, but at the costs of the interior on lower grade models & the new door panels i think they got a decent hit... more than likely honda & nissan will 1up the motor AGAIN. which sucks but only time will tell

now the price: 28k for the se v6 without leather.. i found it over priced.. fully loaded altima SERs go for the same price and have a maunal option.. makes me glad i got the alty..

for those who dont know i have 3 camry's in the family and love them all, but toyota quality is still dropping even with this new camry, i can only hope toyota will help improve their interiors...

Hmm, Altima SE-R 0-60 in 6.6 and Camry XLE V6 0-60 in 6.5 (both according to Edmunds Inside Line.

As for teh $28k price comment. My SE V6 loaded with NAV (not avilable on the Altima SE-R), XM Radio, Spoiler, Remote Start, Leather, Sunroof and everything else available from the factory was bought for $28,800.

The SE V6 doesn't come standard with VSC, it's optional, so it's probably the last thing you should be complaining about.

Yeah, the nose reminds me of a pug. The previous gen, although as exciting as old people playing croquet, is more visually appealing.
